The Cal State San Marcos women's golf team ended its 16-year run in NAIA competition on a high-note. The Cougars recorded their 14
th straight appearance at the NAIA National Championship, had the program's first-ever individual conference medalist, and – for the first time since the 2008-09 season – had a pair of players named NAIA All-America.
Greg Hutton, who previously served solely as the head men's golf coach the previous four seasons,
took over as head coach of the women's team on July 1, 2014. He added former
NAIA All-American Roxy Mueller as his assistant coach.
CSUSM took seventh in its first competition of the fall season after shooting 54-over 646 at the
PLNU Fall Invite at Torrey Pines North Golf Course.
Christina Trujillo was the top finisher for the Cougars at 8-over 156.
Two weeks later, the Cougars recovered from a four-stroke deficit to
win the Embry-Riddle Fall Invite at Talking Rock Golf Course in Prescott, Ariz.
Vanessa Chap shot 73 and
Taylor Coover posted a season-best 74 in the final round. Chap and Coover finished in second and third in the individual competition, as well.
It marked Hutton's first victory as the women's head coach.
CSUSM competed in the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Women's Golf Invite (Oct. 25-26), an all-NCAA Division I competition, and
took home seventh place out of the 13 teams invited.
The Cougars hosted the annual
CSUSM Fall Classic, Nov. 3-4 at Twin Oaks Golf Course. Point Loma Nazarene ran away with the team competition, but the Cougars took second place with a 638 (+62). Chap and Trujillo finished in seventh and ninth, respectively.
After the fall competition season, the Cougars took time to give back to the community along with the softball team by helping to
build a home for Habitat for Humanity in San Marcos.
On Nov. 7, the NAIA announced that the Cougar women would debut at
No. 12 in the NAIA Women's Golf Coaches' Preseason Top 25.
In its first competition of the spring season,
Victoria Smith went 78-78 and was the top finisher for CSUSM as the team
took sixth at the PLNU Super San Diego Championship on Feb. 10 at Riverwalk.
The Cougars made their first of two trips to The Club at Colony Creek in Victoria Texas from Feb 15-16 for the annual
Claude Jacobs Invite hosted by Houston-Victoria. Trujillo matched a school record with a 3-under 69 in her opening round.
She wound up finishing ninth in the 54-hole tournament and the Cougars placed fourth in the competition that featured many of the top-ranked teams in the NAIA. CSUSM's 309 was the lowest team score of the final round.
The Cougars again showed promise with solid final round at the
Cougar Invitational, Mar. 2-3. After a 317 in the opening round, Chap's 73 led the Cougars to a 309 in the final trip around the course. The Cougars took runner-up behind Point Loma. Trujillo took third overall at 7-over 151.
In the final round of the
Primm Battle (Mar. 23-24), CSUSM posted its best score to date with a 12-over 300.
Victoria Smith had a 73, Chap carded 74, Trujillo shot 75 and
Taylor Coover had a 78.
Following the Primm Battle, the Cougars
moved up to No. 10 in the NAIA Top 25, their highest ranking of the season.
CSUSM took third place in the eight-team
Battle at the Rock hosted by UC Riverside (Apr. 6-7). The Cougars were the only non-NCAA Division I squad in the field. Chap had a 1-under 71 in the final round and took fourth overall.
Clearly, the Cougars had saved their best for last. After a 12-over 300 left the Cougars 10 strokes back after the first round of the
A.I.I. Conference Championship, the Cougars posted 2-over 290 in the final round to finish runner-up. The 290 is the lowest single-round total in program history, beating the previous record of 293 set at the 2013 A.I.I. Championship.
In addition, Chap became CSUSM's first-ever individual conference champion after firing a 2-under 70 in the final round. Her total of 1-under 143 is the lowest 36-hole total in program history.
Trujillo tied for third at 1-over 145 and Smith took fifth at 2-over 146.
On Apr. 30, CSUSM learned it would make its 14
th and final appearance at the NAIA National Championship when it
received an at-large bid into the competition. The Cougars would be paired with host SCAD Savannah and Milligan (Tenn.) for the opening two rounds.
Prior to the competition, Chap was honored as the
A.I.I. Female Athlete of the Week, the
April CSUSM Female Student-Athlete of the Month and a
San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month.
The Cougars posted 312 in the first round of the NAIA National Championship behind Trujillo's 73 and Chap's 76 and were 11
th after the
lightning-delayed opening day.CSUSM remained in the same position through the second round and
easily made the cut after 54-holes in 13
th place.
The Cougars moved up a spot on the final day and finished
12th overall at 124-over 1276 (312-314-326-324). Chap tied for 14
th at +17 and Trujillo finished tied for 24
th at +22.
Following the tournament, Chap and Trujillo were named
First Team and Second Team NAIA All-America, respectively. They were the first All-America honorees from CSUSM since 2008-09.
On May 22, the Cougars earned a No. 13 billing in the
NAIA Women's Golf Coaches' Top 25 Postseason Poll.
