Men 8th, Women 12th in NAIA Preseason Golf Polls

KANSAS CITY, Mo.  – The Cal State San Marcos men's and women's golf teams will start the 2014-15 season in the NAIA Top 25, the national office announced Friday.

The Cougar men debuted at No. 8 in the NAIA Men's Golf Coaches' Preseason Top 25, while the women are ranked No. 12 in the NAIA Women's Golf Coaches' Preseason Top 25. The Cougar men moved up eight spots from their final 2013-14 ranking (No. 16). The women moved up to No. 12 from No. 14.

The CSUSM men's team received 413 total votes in the preseason poll, which takes into account how each team performs in the fall season. The Cougars won two tournaments and juniors Ryan Odom and Dylan Healey each took home individual medalist titles.

CSUSM is averaging 290.67 strokes per round, an average of 2.67 strokes over par. The Cougars put together six under-par rounds during the fall season. The Cougars' adjusted scoring average of 72.98 is third-lowest in the NAIA behind only No. 2 Wayland Baptist (71.42) and No. 12 Oklahoma Baptist (72.03).

William Woods came in at No. 1 on the men's side and received 527 total points and 16 of 19 first-place votes.

The Cougar women received 304 total points in the preseason poll. CSUSM won one tournament in the fall, the Embry-Riddle Coed Invite at Talking Rock GC, Sept. 28-29.

CSUSM is averaging 319.89 strokes per round, or 21.89 over par. The Cougars' best score of the fall was a 15-over 303 in the final round of the ERAU Fall Invite. CSUSM has an adjusted scoring average of 72.67.

Northwood (Fla.) received 10 of 17 first-place votes to come in at No. 1 with 457 total points. SCAD Savannah and William Woods are No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

Both CSUSM squads have nearly three months away from competition before starting the spring season in early February.
