RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's golf team posted the second-lowest score of the day with an 18-over 306 during the final round of the Battle at the Rock at Oak Quarry Golf Club. The Cougars placed third with a three-round total of 74-over-par 938 (320-312-306).
UC Riverside won the eight-team competition at 23-over 887 (293-293-301), 45 strokes ahead of second-place Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (307-312-313 – 932, +68). UCR registered the lowest round of the day. CSUSM, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA, was the only non-NCAA Division I squad in the tournament.
Vanessa Chap led all Cougars with a 1-under 71, her first round under-par since the 2011-12 season. The senior moved up six spots to finish fourth in the field at 11-over-par 227 (79-77-71).
Chap is averaging 75.2 strokes per round in her last five rounds of competition. She's also recorded three-straight top-10 finishes.
Christina Trujillo carded 75,
Taylor Coover posted 77 and
Victoria Smith rounded out the scoring with an 83.
Gabby Bautista's 91 was thrown out.
Coover tied for 12
th at 18-over 234 (79-78-77) and Smith placed 16
th at 22-over 238 (80-75-83). Trujillo tied for 18
th (82-85-75 – 241, +25) and Bautista finished 33
rd (82-82-91 – 255, +39).
The Cougars are finished with their regular season slate and will head to the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Championship, Apr. 26-27, in Victoria Texas in search of their first-ever conference title.
