SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's track & field team will compete this week at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships, Thursday, May 4 through Saturday, May 7. The conference meet is being held at Chico State's University Stadium. The Cougars will first see action on day two of the competition.

CSUSM Postseason Eligibility
Due to stipulations related to CSUSM's NCAA Division II Candidacy Year Three status, the Cougars are only eligible to compete in the prelims at the CCAA Championships. For events in which only finals are held the Cougars are eligible to place.
CSUSM is not eligible for the NCAA DII Track & Field Championships as a part of NCAA Division II Candidacy Year Three.
Ryan Maize (3000m steeplechase) and
Justin Washington (800m) have achieved NCAA DII provisional qualifiers this season.

CCAA Championship History
CCAA Championship Competition
- Chico State is ranked No. 2 on the current U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II Polls.
- Prior to this week's No. 2 ranking, Chico State had held the top spot on the first six polls of the season.
- Chico State (No. 1), UC San Diego (No. 3) and Cal Poly Pomona (No. 7) currently represent the CCAA in West Region polls.
Washington Honored as CCAA Track Athlete of the Week
- Justin Washington was named the Track Athlete of the Week for April 24-30 after a stellar weekend at the adidas/Steve Scott invitational.
- Washington ran a 1:53.21 in the 800m to finish in 10th-place, his seventh top 10 result in the vent this year.
- In the 4x400m, Washington helped the squad to a fourth-place result, running the second leg of the squad's season best performance of 3:18.27.
Washington Named CSUSM April Student-Athlete of the Month
- Justin Washington earned his first CSUSM Student-Athlete of the Month award following an excellent month on the track.
- Washington ran the second-fastest 800m in CSUSM history, posting a time of 1:51.34 at the Triton Invitational to place fourth.
- At the California Collegiate Invitational, Washington finished second with a mark of 1:54.52.
- Washington also helped the 4x400m relay team to a season best 3:18.27 at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational.

- The 4x100m relay of Bryce Johnson, Tyler Luis, Nathan Hale, Jr. and Brian Wright clocked a season best to place fourth.
- The 4x400m relay of Luis, seniors Justin Washington and Aaron Hickman and Hale, Jr. also placed fourth with a season best performance.
- Wright qualified for the CCAA Championships in the 200m.
- Washington finished 10th in the 800m.
- The Cougars finished the regular season with a 19 student-athletes achieving the qualifying standard for the CCAA Championships:
Maize Named CCAA Track Athlete of the Week
- Ryan Maize won the 3000m steeplechase at the Oxy Distance Carnival, earning CCAA Track Athlete of the Week honors the week of March 6-12.
- Maize's time of 9:04.66 is the fastest in the CCAA this season and would stand as an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier.
- The time of 9:04.66 is just 3.28 seconds off of his own school record.
- Maize if the first member of the Cal State San Marcos men's track & field program to earn the honor.
CSUSM Begins Final Year of NCAA Division II Transition
The Cougars enter their final year of the NCAA Division II transition process in 2017. Now NCAA DII Provisional Members, CSUSM will compete in NCAA DII and California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedules, but will still not be eligible for postseason team competition until 2017.

Steve Scott – The Man, the Myth, the Miler
- Started the CSUSM cross country and track & field programs in the 1999-2000 season.
- Three-time Olympian and was a six-time All-American in track and cross country at UC Irvine.
- Inducted into the United States Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2002.
- Ran 134 sub-4 minute miles in his illustrious career.
- Has coached six All-CCAA cross country and two All-CCAA track & field student-athletes.
- Coached over 140 NAIA All-Americans and was named NAIA Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year three times.
- Selected Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Cross Country Coach of the Year 10 times.
