CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season with a 4-1 decision at Pomona-Pitzer on Wendesday evening.
Down 1-0 early in the second half, freshman Adrian Martinez brought the Cougars even as he collected a clearance from the Sagehens' box and rocketed a shot inside the right post from 20 yards out. It was the first goal of his young career.
Pomona-Pitzer took the lead in the 56
th minute on Guy Thyer's header off a cross from Nathan Shekita off a short corner. The Sagehens added goals in the 74
th and 81
st minutes, respectively, to put the match away.
CSUSM and Pomona-Pitzer (1-1) matched each other with 14 shots on the day, with the Sagehens edging the Cougars in shots on goal, 6-5. Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper Rollie Thayer was forced to double
Landon Sherwood in total saves, four to two.
"It's a good thing that we have a quick turnaround [before playing Fresno Pacific]," said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. "We're going to come back, train tomorrow, and get things right to move forward."
The Cougars move to 3-1 all-time against the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer had not previously scored a goal in three contests against CSUSM.
The Cougars move to 0-1-1 on the year and will travel to face Fresno Pacific (1-1) on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
