ROCKLIN, Calif. – A lone first-half goal was all the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (1-0-0) needed as it opened the 2026 season with a 1-0 win at Jessup (0-1-0) on Thursday at Warrior Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Off a midfield pass into the box by Cisco Avila, Matthew Ibarra put a low shot into the bottom left corner of the goal from just right of the penalty marker, past the keeper's outstretched leg to give CSUSM a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.
• At the half, Jessup had outshot CSUSM 7-4 while the Cougars had a 2-1 advantage on corner kicks.
• The Cougars dominated the second half, holding the Warriors to no shots while taking 11 of their own. CSUSM also had a 4-1 edge on corner kicks.

 
QUICK KICKS

• CSUSM ended the contest with the edge in shots (15-7), shots on goal (6-1) and corner kicks (6-2).
• Ibarra's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
• Yoel Vazquez earned his first collegiate clean sheet, making one save while facing seven shots.
• This was the first-ever meeting between the Cougars and Warriors.
