CSUSM Earns Road Win at Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (3-1-0) posted a 2-1 win at Biola (0-4-2) on Saturday afternoon at Al Barbour Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With possession just outside the right side of the box, Jeremy Larson sent a cross near the left post, where Luc McGreevey Couchman headed it into the left side of the goal to give Biola a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.
  • Just a few moments later in the 26th minute, Matthew Ibarra took advantage of a loose ball in front of the keeper and put a shot into the right side of the goal from six yards out to knot the game at 1-all.
  • After 45 minutes, CSUSM led the contest in shots (9-3) and shots on goal (4-2) while Biola had the half's lone corner kick.
  • Just over a minute into the second half, the Cougars struck again. After a CSUSM throw-in, Jacob Arellano headed the ball over to Ibarra in the top left corner of the box, who then made a backwards pass towards the goal to Cisco Avila. Avila then put a shot into the left side of the goal from eight yards out to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the 47th minute.

  • Avila's goal was his team-leading third of the season and eighth of his career.
  • Ibarra's goal was his second of the year.
  • The assists by Ibarra and Arellano were their firsts of the season.
  • This was CSUSM's third win in the last four seasons against Biola and the second straight in La Mirada.
  • The Cougars now own an 8-5-5 lead in the all-time series against the Eagles.
  • CSUSM had the edge in shots (12-11) while both teams put five shots on goal with one corner kick.
  • This is CSUSM's first time starting a season at 3-1-0 since 2010.
 
UP NEXT
CSUSM will play its final non-conference game and first home contest of the year on Monday as it faces Westmont at 3 p.m. inside The Cage. Prior to the game, CSUSM will honor this year's 12 seniors at 2:30 p.m.
