COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (2-1-0) earned a 3-0 shutout victory on the road at Vanguard (0-3-0) on Thursday at the VU Soccer Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Scoreless after the first half, both sides put up four shots for the period while Vanguard had the period's lone shot on goal.
• Vanguard committed an off-the-ball foul in the center of the box, setting up a penalty kick for CSUSM in the 48th minute. Cisco Avila put a low shot into the bottom right corner of the goal to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
• Off a CSUSM corner kick, Avila gained possession just outside the top of the box and put a shot into the right side of the goal to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead in the 54th minute.
• Just over a minute later in the 55th minute, CSUSM went ahead 3-0. After a long pass from deep in Cougar territory, Andrew Valencia found Blake Haseyama just past midfield, who dribbled into the box and slotted a low roller into the left side of the net.
• The Cougars kept the Lions at bay for the rest of the contest and ended the half with the edge in shots (9-4) and corner kicks (3-0).

 
QUICK KICKS

• CSUSM ended the game with the edge in shots (13-8), corner kicks (4-2) and possession (54%-46%) while Vanguard tallied more shots on goal (4-3).
• This was the Cougars' largest margin of victory in seven matches against the Lions dating back to 2006.
• CSUSM now owns a 4-3 lead in the all-time series against Vanguard and is 4-1 when playing in Costa Mesa.
• Avila's goals were his firsts of the season, and he now has seven for his career at CSUSM. He last scored two goals in a game against Cal State East Bay last season.
• Haseyama's goal was his second of the year and fifth of his career.
