CSUSM Forces 1-1 Draw with No. 18 Biola, Remains Unbeaten at Home

Box Score
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team and No. 18 Biola battled through two extra periods on Wednesday afternoon before settling on a 1-1 draw at the CSUSM Multipurpose Field.

Tyler Spitznagel took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Eagles three minutes into the second half, evening the score with his first goal of the season.

CSUSM moves to 1-3-2 on the season and 1-0-1 at home. Biola rests at 2-2-1 overall.

The Cougars looked dangerous early on, earning a pair of free kicks on the left edge of the box. On the first, CSUSM played a short pass to Alex Brunsell on the outside, who fired a shot off a defender out for a corner kick. Moments later, Brunsell tried his hand at a direct shot, missing the far post by a yard.

Unable to convert on early chances, the Cougars found themselves down in the 22nd minute. Biola midfielder Tony Montalvo collected a long ball in the box and passed to his right to Joao Toscan. Toscan took a dribble to his right before popping a shot high to the left post that beat CSUSM goalkeeper Landon Sherwood.

The goal seemed to fire up the Cougars, as Ryan Kisgen and Brunsell each had quality looks at goal. In the 33rd minute, Kisgen won three consecutive tackles on his way up the field before slipping the ball inside for Warren Ashcroft; Ashcroft attempted a cheeky shot with the outside of his right foot, but it was handled by Eagle keeper Joshua Crichton.

Two minutes from halftime, Kisgen earned a free kick, once again at the left edge of the box. Ashcroft stepped up to take it and his high-arching shot barely missed the right post.

CSUSM was rewarded for its persistence minutes into the second half, as the Eagle defense failed to clear a bouncing ball. It trickled behind the back line and a sprinting Spitznagel beat Crichton to it, sneaking a left-footed shot inside the right post.

The Cougars nearly made it 2-0 20 minute later, as substitute Luka Stevanovic took his chances on a free kick from 25 yards out on the left side. Stevanovic played a curling ball to the right post and Crichton did well to push it out for a corner just before it caught the right side of the net.

The CSUSM attack surged forward and at one point earned four consecutive corner kicks within a span of two minutes. However, the Cougars were unable to convert. Moments from time, Brunsell and Kisgen nearly hooked up for the deciding score, but Brunsell's chip inside the box for Kisgen was foiled by Crichton's punch at the penalty spot.

Both squads had opportunities at goal in the extra frame, to no avail. Kisgen and Sullivan Tobin combined for a clever wall pass inside the Biola box, but a well-timed slide tackle by an Eagle defender knocked the ball away before Kisgen could get a shot off.

The Eagles' Marshall Deogracia nearly ended the game in the first overtime. His chip from 20 yards beat Sherwood, but bounced off the crossbar and was cleared out of danger.

CSUSM outshot Biola 18-10 while placing a third of those attempts on frame.

The Cougars travel to face Vanguard at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
