TITLE DEFENSE ON THE HORIZON
The Cougars were recently granted the fourth-seed for the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Championship Tournament at Cal State San Marcos. CSUSM, the defending champion, will face top-seeded Ashford (Iowa) on Friday, Nov. 9 at 2:00 p.m. on Mangrum Soccer Field. The Cougars and Saints tied earlier this season on Oct. 6, 1-1, in Salt Lake City. CSUSM is 7-3 all-time in the A.I.I. Tournament, its lone conference title coming in 2011.
WHEN THE TIME COMES…
After a sluggish start to the season, one in which CSUSM won just a single game in its first nine contests, the Cougars have won four of their last five. CSUSM has shutout its opponents in three of those four wins, outscoring teams a combined 7-0. The Cougars managed just eight goals over its first nine games; however, CSUSM has exploded for 13 over its last five contests, outscoring teams 13-4 since Oct. 10.
WESTMINSTER DRAB-Y
The Cougars had their way with the Griffins of Westminster (Utah) on Sautrday during the team's annual Homecoming Game.
Scott Rice scored twice and
Warren Ashcroft added a goal in the first half, as the Cougars recorded their second-consecutive shutout, 3-0. Rice and Ashcroft also tallied assists, as did
Alex Brunsell and
Eric Lopez. Brunsell's assist on Ashcroft's goal handed Brunsell the CSUSM new single-season school record for assists, with seven on the season.
BETHESDA COMIN' IN
The Flames have lost 10 of their last 12 games after starting the season 3-0. Bethesda surprised CSUSM in the teams' only other meeting in 2011, downing the Cougars 2-1 on Oct. 1.
