In their first-ever NAIA National Championship Opening Round match, Cal State San Marcos men's soccer gave #8-seed Azusa Pacific a brief scare on Saturday, but home-standing APU eventually dispatched of CSUSM 4-1.

CSU San Marcos finishes its season with a 10-7-1 record.  Azusa Pacific improves to 12-3-3 and advances to play in the 16-team field at the 2011 NAIA National Championship Tournament in Decatur, Alabama.

Coming off a signature victory for the program in the A.I.I. Conference Championship Game in Georgia, CSUSM started off strong on Saturday, showing no fear in facing an Azusa squad that had beaten them 2-0 in a meeting earlier this season.

In fact, CSUSM stunned the home team by making the game's first breakthrough in the 32nd minute.  Off a free kick from a dangerous position, Sullivan Tobin drove a ball into the box, and Scott Rice was able to redirect it into the net to put the Cougars on top 1-0.

But it wouldn't last.  The worst time to concede a goal, they say, is right before the end of the half, and in the 43rd minute CSUSM did exactly that, as Azusa's Oktay Bulut beat Cougar keeper Kiki Castro following off a cross.

And that would prove to be the beginning of the end for the visitors, with APU jumping all over CSUSM in the second half and dominating play.  Azusa scored in the 52nd, 60th, and 81st minutes to roll to the win over what was, at least for the second half, an overmatched San Marcos side.

“As a coach, I'm at a loss,” said Pulvers following the match.

Azusa held a 15-9 advantage in shots and 3-1 advantage in corners for the match.
