SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team placed five student-athletes on the 2024 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division II West All-Region Team on Wednesday.
Luke Reece earned first-team honors while
Garrett Teunissen and
Preston Kelly were named to the second team.
Ethan Rivera and
Phoenix Sommay were honorable mentions.
Reece is hitting .357, 56 hits, eight doubles, a triple, and an on-base percentage of .447 while leading the team with a 1.078 OPS, a .631 slugging percentage and 11 home runs. Reece earned All-CCAA first-team honors last week – his third time earning all-conference honors.
Teunissen leads the team with .380 batting average, 15 doubles, 65 hits, 22 stolen bases and 12 sacrifice bunts while tallying a 1.025 OPS, 47 runs, two triples, 44 RBIs, a .579 slugging percentage and a .446 on-base percentage. Last week, he was named the CCAA Player of the Year while also receiving All-CCAA first-team honors.
Kelly leads the CCAA with seven saves while posting a 3.96 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 38.2 innings and 22 appearances out of the pen. Kelly received All-CCAA first-team honors last week – his second time earning all-conference honors.
Rivera has the Cougars' second-best batting average at .375 with a .943 OPS, 31 runs, 54 hits, nine doubles, two home runs, 34 RBIs, a .479 slugging percentage, a .464 on-base percentage and a conference-leading seven sacrifice flies. He was named to the All-CCAA second team last week.
Sommay is hitting .349 with a .960 OPS, 52 runs, 60 hits, nine doubles, one triple, four home runs, 36 RBIs and eight stolen bases while having an active reached-base streak of 41 games. He was named to the All-CCAA first team last week.
This is the first time CSUSM has had student-athletes earn NCBWA All-West Region honors since 2019.
The Cougars will make their first-ever NCAA Division II West Regional appearance on May 16-18 at host Point Loma. CSUSM will open the regional by facing Cal Poly Pomona at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
