Three Cougars Named to D2CCA All-West Region Team, Samayoa Named POTY

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team had three selected to the Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-West Region Team, as Zech Samayoa was named the West Region Player of the Year, while Canon King and Christopher Tampoya were named to the second team.

Earning his second West Region Player of the Year nod this postseason, Samayoa received nine of 22 first-place votes after concluding a historic season for CSUSM, setting single-season records for home runs (23), RBIs (78), total bases (151) and slugging percentage (.868) as the team's designated hitter. The Cerritos native and designated hitter led the Cougars with a .362 batting average, 53 runs, 63 hits, 17 doubles and a 1.297 OPS as he earned CCAA Player and Newcomer of the Year honors. Samayoa is the program's first D2CCA West Region Player of the Year and is just the second first-team selection in team history. Last week, he earned West Region Player of the Year honors from the NCBWA.

Earning second-team honors as an outfielder, King had a historic freshman season for CSUSM as he batted .339 with 49 runs, 58 hits, 12 doubles, three triples, 14 home runs, 58 RBIs, a .690 slugging percentage, a .472 on-base percentage and a 1.162 OPS. King's RBI total for the year ranked second in team history, only behind Samayoa. He was named to the All-CCAA first team and was once named the CCAA Player of the Week, becoming the first freshman in program history to earn both honors.

Tampoya earned second-team honors as a utility player, splitting his time between second and third base. The freshman from Westlake Village concluded the season with a .357 batting average in addition to 45 hits, 33 runs, 25 RBIs, 13 doubles, one triple, one home run, a .500 slugging percentage, a .478 on-base percentage and a .978 OPS while ending the year with an active 26-game reached-base streak. He was previously named an All-CCAA honorable mention.

This is the first time CSUSM has placed three Cougars on the D2CCA All-West Region team.
