CSUSM Hosts Sonoma State, Cal Poly Humboldt This Week

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (7-11, 5-5 CCAA) will conclude its three-match homestand this weekend when the Cougars welcome Sonoma State (11-6, 6-4 CCAA) and Cal Poly Humboldt (5-13, 2-8 CCAA) to The Sports Center on Friday and Saturday, respectively. 

LAST WEEK

  • The Cougars rebounded from being swept last Friday in Pomona with a five-set upset win against then-No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday in The Sports Center. 
  • CSUSM dropped three sets to the Broncos by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-15 on Friday. 
  • The Cougars defeated Pomona in five sets on Saturday by scores of 15-25, 25-15, 26-24, 16-25 and 15-13. 

BY THE NUMBERS
  • CSUSM is in seventh place in the CCAA standings, one game back from Cal State East Bay, Sonoma State and San Francisco State who are in a three-way tie for fourth place. 
  • Saturday's five-set victory was CSUSM's second of the season. In the Cougar Classic, the Cougars posted a five-set comeback over St. Edward's on Sept. 8. 
  • With 1,002 digs, the Cougars moved into third in the conference.
  • Tori Goff is dishing out 8.37 assists per set, ranking her fourth in the CCAA. 
  • Mia Christensen is fifth in the CCAA with 232 total digs and digs per set with 3.52. 
  • Head Coach Andrea Leonard reached a career milestone – her 200th CSUSM win – against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 16. 
  • Leonard is five wins away from collecting her 300th career victory as a collegiate head coach.

SONOMA STATE SHOWDOWN

  • The Seawolves started the season strong with two wins over national-powerhouse Cal State San Bernardino, who was ranked in the top 10 at the time. 
  • SSU stumbled in the second weekend of conference play with a three-match losing streak with losses at Stanislaus State (0-3), Cal State East Bay (2-3) and Cal State Monterey Bay (1-3). 
  • Sonoma is 4-4 when playing on the road this season. 
  • The Seawolves are in a three-way tie for fourth place in the CCAA standings with Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State. 
  • The Cougars and Seawolves are tied 4-4 in the all-time series with CSUSM holding a 3-2 lead when playing at home. 
  • Prior to being swept in the season series by Sonoma in 2022, the Cougars had won four consecutive meetings against the Seawolves. 
  • The Seawolves rank second in the CCAA in aces per set (1.91).
  • Sonoma is third in the conference in kills per set (12.88) and assists per set (11.83). 
  • Jen Trephan is the NCAA Division II leader in triple doubles (kills, assists, digs) with six this season

CAL POLY HUMBOLDT BREAKDOWN

  • Despite their 2-8 conference record, the Lumberjacks have been dangerous this season with three of their CCAA losses coming in five sets. 
  • Humboldt is 1-6 on the road this season with its lone win coming in a five-set victory at Stanislaus State. 
  • This past weekend, the Jacks dropped a four-set match and were swept by the Seawolves who are their travel partner this season. 
  • The Cougars have won their last seven meeting against the Jacks and hold a 7-2 lead in the all-time series against Humboldt. 
  • CSUSM is 4-0 when hosting the Jacks in The Sports Center. 
  • Humboldt ranks sixth in aces per set (1.76) and seventh in blocks per set (1.97) this season. 
  • Awelina Fakalata has the second-best kills per set average in the CCAA at 3.84.

LOOK INSIDE THE COUGARS

  • The Cougars return five starters from the 2022 season - Trinity Barr (OH), Sofia Hedqvist (OH), Jessica Thomas (OH), Mia Christensen (DS/L) and Jackie Phillips (DS/L)
  • Seven will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Friday with four being true freshmen and three junior college transfers. 
  • The Cougars finished their 2022 campaign with an 8-17 overall record and were 7-11 in CCAA play – eighth in the CCAA standings. 
  • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2022 ranked seventh in blocks per set (1.87). 
  • In the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish ninth.

THE LEONARD FILE
  • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her 13th season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
  • Leonard has a 203-157 (.564) record as CSUSM's head coach.
  • In 17 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 295-283 (.510) career record.
  • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
