MERCED, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (4-6, 1-2 CCAA) fell to UC Merced (4-5, 1-1 CCAA) in four sets (19-25, 23-25, 25-18, 22-25) Friday afternoon at Greg and Cathie Hostetler Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UC Merced scored the first three points of the opening set and maintained its lead despite CSUSM pulling within one at 11-10 and 14-13. The Bobcats used a 7-2 run to extend their advantage to 21-15 before taking the set 25-19. UC Merced hit .500 in the frame.
- The second set featured eight ties as neither team led by more than five. CSUSM erased a 17-12 deficit with five consecutive points and later used a 3-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. An Apelado ace extended the Cougars' advantage to 22-20, but UC Merced scored five of the final six points to prevail 25-23.
- CSUSM broke a 4-all tie with a 4-0 run in the third set and later scored four straight to build a 13-8 lead. The Cougars extended the margin to 21-14 and hit .414 while holding UC Merced to a .094 percentage in the 25-18 victory.
- The Cougars jumped out to leads of 3-0, 9-3 and 13-6 in the fourth set. UC Merced rallied to take a 17-16 advantage before Kranz tied the score with a kill. After falling behind 24-19, CSUSM fought off three match points with a Seligmiller kill, a Tindall-Cooley block and a UC Merced attack error. The Bobcats ended the match with a kill for the 25-22 win.
