No. 14/10 Cougars Begin Season at RJGA Shootout

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 14/10 Cal State San Marcos women's golf team will begin its 2022-23 campaign in Arizona at the RJGA Shootout at Estrella hosted by Western New Mexico on Monday and Tuesday. 


COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • This year's squad will feature three new Cougars in the lineup — freshmen Lynn Pham and Sade Jackson as well as Kansas transfer Caroline Wales
  • Returning for a fifth-year, Breann Horn was a member of the 2019 NCAA National Championship Runner-Up team as well as a 2022 WGCA All-American first team honoree. 
  • The Cougars won their third consecutive CCAA Championship title in 2022, defeating second-place Cal State LA by 18 strokes. 
  • Then-freshman Makenna Cabardo was named the CCAA Championship Runner-Up after carding a 4-under 68 in the final round. 
  • CSUSM won four of its eight tournaments in 2021-22 including its own Fujikura Invitational which featured 19 teams from all over the United States.  
  • The Cougars moved up to No. 14 this week in the first regular-season poll after being ranked No. 15 in the 2022-23 WGCA Coaches Preseason Poll. CSUSM is ranked No. 10 in the latest Golfstat.com National Poll.

ARIZONA BOUND FOR RJGA SHOOTOUT

  • This is CSUSM's seventh time competing in the RJGA Shootout at Estrella, which was previously named the WNMU Intercollegiate prior to 2019-20 season.
  • The Cougars have been victorious the last four times they have competed in this tournament.
  • Last fall, the Cougars rallied back from five strokes down, firing a 293 (+5) to finish with a 598 (+22) and earn a six-stroke victory. 
  • CSUSM collected individual honors the three previous tournaments with the 2019 NCAA Division II National Champion Jaime Jacob snagging the honors in 2018, Sarah Garcia in 2019 and current redshirt junior Breann Horn claiming a share of the honor last season.

THE HUTTON FILE

  • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
  • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
  • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019 and 2022
  • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
