SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State San Marcos women's track & field ended the 2022 CCAA Track & Field Championships with a third-place finish and three more medals on the final day of competition at Cox Stadium on Saturday.
The Cougars' third-place finish at the CCAA Championships is the best in program history as the women's team had finished no better than sixth prior to this season. In all, CSUSM finished the meet with a program-best five medalists and two individual champions.
TOP PERFORMANCES
- Clarissa Garcia defended her crown and earned gold in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.56. Teammate Ana Mercado joined her on the podium with a second-place finish of 2:13.98. Luz Mercado scored points for the Cougars as well with a fourth-place finish at 2:18.46, giving CSUSM 23 total points for the event.
- In the 1500-meter run, Luz Mercado (4:35.24), Renee Laurenzana (4:41.39), Ana Mercado (4:41.94) and Emma Mills (4:42.25) finished third through sixth and gave CSUSM 18 total points for the event.
- The 4x100-meter relay team of Kayla James, Devin Yarbrough, Teigen O'Donnell and Isabel Ortiz earned CSUSM four points with a fifth-place finish of 48.31.
- O'Donnell later took fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.93 and gave the Cougars four points.
- Alyse Sibley took sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with the sixth-fastest time in program history at 11:40.62 and earned CSUSM three points.
- Mia Salinas took seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.45 and earned the Cougars two points.
- CSUSM wrapped up the CCAA Championships with a sixth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of Isabel Ortiz, Mia Salinas, Sarah Davis and Kayla James finished with a time of 4:02.07.
