SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State San Marcos men's track & field team ended the 2022 CCAA Track & Field Championships with a third-place finish and five more medals on the last day of competition at Cox Stadium on Saturday.
Coming into this weekend's meet, CSUSM had finished no better than fifth in previous CCAA Track & Field Championships. The Cougars finished the meet with a program-best eight medalists, doubling the previous high of four at the 2019 CCAA Championships.
TOP PERFORMANCES
- A day after earning silver in the high jump, Isaac Muanza was crowned the champion of the triple jump with a wind-aided mark of 14.36 meters on his second attempt. His first attempt of the event was a non-wind-aided 14.24 meters and still would have defeated second place by .08 meters.
- Justice Chima silvered in the 200-meter dash and broke his own school record with a time of 21.28 – .19 better than his previous mark.
- Nick Melanese took bronze in the 1500-meter run with the third-fastest time in program history at 3:48.23. Trevor Boaz took fifth at 3:49.68, and Shea Vavra posted the seventh-fastest time in school history at 3:50.03. The Cougars earned 13 total points for the event.
- Chris Lee earned bronze in the pole vault with a height of 4.38 meters – eighth best in program history.
- Jonathan Burton finished with a bronze medal in the 400-meter hurdles as he came in with a time of 53.07 while Temidayo Fateropa took sixth with a time of 56.54. Combined, both earned nine points for CSUSM.
- The team of Jonathan Burton, Justice Chima, Hayden Sumner and Temidayo Fateropa took fourth in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 42.43 and earned CSUSM five points.
- Trevor Boaz and Nick Melanese finished fourth and fifth in the 800-meter run with times of 1:55.20 and 1:55.51, respectively. The two Cougars earned CSUSM nine total points for the event.
- Kalathan Laiwa-McKay took sixth in the discus throw with a mark of 44.22 meters on his final attempt and earned CSUSM three points.
- In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Alex Anderson took sixth with a time of 9:43.19 and earned CSUSM three points. Jason Morse earned the Cougars a point with an eighth-place finish at 10:08.92.
- The Cougars ended the CCAA Championships with a fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of Justice Chima, Trevor Boaz, Jonathan Burton and Nick Melanese came in with a time of 3:20.50 and earned CSUSM five points.
