VISTA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's golf team, playing in its first spring tournament of 2018, took first-place in the 16-team CSUSM Fujikura Invitational on Tuesday at the Shadowridge Golf Club. CSUSM finished with a 54-hole total 11-over 875 (286-294-295).
CSUSM tied for the second-lowest score of the final round after carding a 7-over 295 and concluded the tournament one shot ahead of second place, Chico State (876, +12).
Cal State Monterey Bay (886, +22) finished third while California Baptist (889, +25) and Stanislaus State (889, +25) tied for fourth to round out the top-five.
Senior
Chris Tuulik, the leader after day one, dropped one spot to take second-place with a three-round total score of 6-under 210. His 16 birdies were tied for most in the field and his 1-under on par 3 scoring was tops of the tournament.
Sophomore
Justin Vrzich carded a 1-over 73 in the third round for a final score of 6-over 222 and finished in a tie for 15th place. His eagle on the 9th hole in round one was the lone eagle for CSUSM.
Senior
Braeden Koran (227, +11), junior
Jordan McBrayer (227, +11) and freshman
Randy Vergel de Dios (227, +11) all finished in a seven-way tie for 23rd place. Koran was tied for second amongst the 79-player field with 38 pars while McBrayer finished with 35 and tied for fifth for most pars. Vergel de Dios, playing in his first collegiate tournament, jumped 10 spots after carding a 2-over 74 in the final round.
CSUMB's Elis Svard took home the individual title after carding a 7-under 209 (68-70-71).
CSUSM will take exactly one month off before heading north to compete in the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay at Hiddenbroke Golf Course on March 5-6.
