CHICO, Calif. – In his first collegiate championship performance, freshman
Nick Heid jumped into Cal State San Marcos men's track & field history at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Track & Field Championships with an All-CCAA performance at Chico State on Saturday.
Heid matched two competitors with a top high jump clearance of 1.98m, settling for runner-up due to requiring two more attempts to clear the height than the champion, UC San Diego's Raymond Silver.
"Nick was outstanding today," head coach
Steve Scott said. "He is a very solid performer that was able to put up an excellent result."
The height is the best of Heid's career and the third-highest in CSUSM recorded history. Heid joins fellow freshman
Joshua Litwiller in earning
All-CCAA honors at the 2017 CCAA Championships. It is the
second straight year that a high jumper has garnered the distinction for the Cougars.
The men's 4x400m squad of sophomore
Tyler Luis, seniors
Justin Washington and
Aaron Hickman and sophomore
Nathan Hale, Jr. posted a time of 3:22.79, just missing the podium with the fourth-fastest result in the final.
The 4x100m relay of sophomore
Bryce Johnson, Luis, Hale, Jr. and freshman
Brian Wright posted a time of 42.18, the best mark of the season and the sixth-fastest in the final.
In the 5000m final, sophomore
Joe Gonzalez wrapped up a solid 2017 campaign with a time of 15:02.84, the seventh-fastest in the final. Sophomore
Steven Terris registered a time of 15:25.22, the eighth-fastest in the event, one day after finishing fifth in the 10,000m final.
Freshman
Shea Vavra ran a personal best 3:57.49 in the 1500m to finish with the eighth-fastest time in the contest.
Performing well in the field events was freshman
Antonio Riggins, who leaped a personal best in the triple jump of 13.82m, the sixth-longest mark in the final.
In his final competition for the Cougars, senior thrower
Josh Maffei picked up a personal best in the discus with a throw of 43.58m, the ninth-longest mark in the final, and had the 10th-best mark in the shot put with a heave of 13.40m.
"Overall our team improved greatly over last year," Scott said. "We had an increase in the number of All-CCAA performers and had some close calls; things are looking good for next year."
As Candidacy Year Three members of NCAA Division II, the Cougars were not eligible to score points toward the team total and individuals were not eligible to advance to the finals in their respective events if the event included a preliminary heat.
Chico State won the team championship for the second straight year, finishing with 242.50 points, 49.5 points ahead of runner-up UC San Diego. Currently ranked No.2 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA
Division II Polls, the Wildcats have won 13 of the last 14 CCAA championships.
