SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Ethan Alvano, a junior guard on the men's basketball team, and Gabriela Arizaga, a freshman infielder on the softball team, have been named the Cal State San Marcos Student-Athletes for the Month for February 2017.
 
The CSUSM Student-Athletes of the Month awards are determined through a vote of all Department of Athletics coaches, administrators and staff. Each in-season program nominates a student-athlete to be considered for the award each month.
 
Alvano led the men's basketball team to a 4-2 record in February, averaging 20.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 2.5 steals per game. He shot 55.7 percent (44-79) from the floor, 53.6 percent (15-28) from behind the arc and 84.6 percent (22-26) during the month. The Corona native compiled 15 points and 14 assists in a 94-76 win at Stainslaus State on Feb. 9. Alvano had 21 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer, five rebounds and seven assists in a 59-58 win at Chico State on Feb. 11. He amassed 31 points on 65.7 percent (11-17) shooting at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Feb. 23.
 
Arizaga hit .429 with 12 hits, five runs, four RBI and two home runs during the month. She went 4-for-4 with one run, two RBI and one home run against UC San Diego on Feb. 12. In a 3-2 win at Azusa Pacific on Feb. 24, Arizaga went 2-for-3 with one run, one RBI and one home run.
