Men's Outdoor Track & Field

Track & Field to Compete at Oxy Distance Carnival and San Diego Collegiate Challenge

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's and women's track & field teams will compete in a pair of meets this weekend. On Friday, the Cougar distance squads will race at the Oxy Distance Carnival at Occidental College. Competition will get underway for the Cougars at 3:40 p.m. with the women's 800m. The meet runs late into the night with the men's 10,000m scheduled to begin at 10:15 p.m.
 
On Saturday, the rest of the men's and women's teams will compete at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge on the track of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival UC San Diego. Field events will begin at 12 p.m. with the women's long jump and javelin. Track events start at 1:05 p.m. with the women's 4x400m relay.

Wyckoff Named Cal State San Marcos Student-Athlete of the Month
Freshman sprinter Lauren Wyckoff was named the Cal State San Marcos Female Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of February 2016 in a vote of all Department of Athletics coaches, administrators and staff.
 
Wyckoff ran a team-best 1:00.26 in the 400m at the NAU Tune-Up and also competed in the 100m, 4x1 and 4x4 during the indoor season.

Last Time Out: 2016 Cal State L.A. Invitational
Trent Warren had a record-breaking day, setting the new CSUSM mark in the 3000m at 8:19.87 to win the event. Frederik Jahr won a jumpoff against two other competitors to claim victory in the high jump with a leap of 1.95m. Justin Washington and Fereon Meferia placed second and third, respectively, in the 800m. On the women's side, Charlotte Kuzminsky finished third in the 800m and the 4x400m relay of Jasmine Williams, Kuzminsky, Lauren Wyckoff and Natalie Rodriguez placed second. 2015 Oxy Distance Carnival Recap
Steven Ing and Ryan Maize qualified for NAIA nationals in the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase, respectively, with "A" standard times in their events. Terra McGinnis hit the "B" standard in the 10,000m. For a full recap of the event, click here.
 
2015 San Diego Collegiate Challenge Recap
The men's team finished fourth and the women's team placed sixth. Brittany Hollie hit the NAIA "A" standard in the 100-meter hurdles. Jason Bandong won the 400-meter hurdles, earning 10 points for the Cougars. For a full recap of the event, click here.
 
2016 Outdoor Season Recap
Rossi Relays (February 27)
The men's DMR team of Justin Washington, Aaron Hickman, Alex Gronotte and Trent Warren won with a school-record time of 10:04.38, the second straight year the record was set at the Rossi Relays. The women's 4x800 squad of Charlotte Kuzminsky, Arianna Garcia-Swantek, Tina Girolamo and Cristen Lane was also victorious with a time of 9:36.14. Domenique Barnes, Joshrey Estelle, Patrick Holstrom, Bryce Johnson, Kamarria Rehn and Jasmine Williams became the first Cougars to post qualifying marks for the CCAA Track & Field Championships. 2015 Fall CCAA All-Academic Award Winners
Sixteen members of the men's and women's track & field teams were honored in fall for their efforts in the classroom, earning 2015 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Academic Awards.
 
In order to qualify, student-athletes must be of sophomore academic standing or higher, hold at least a cumulative 3.3 GPA and must have competed in a conference-sponsored sport.

Steve Scott – The Man, the Myth, the Miler
Considered one of the greatest mile runners in American history, CSUSM head coach Steve Scott is a three-time Olympian and was a six-time All-American in track and cross country at UC Irvine. A member the United States Track & Field Hall of Fame, Scott ran 134 sub-4 minute miles in his illustrious career. Scott started the Cougar cross country and track & field programs in the 1999-2000 season. He has coached over 140 All-Americans and been named NAIA Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year three times. He has also been selected Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Cross Country Coach of the Year 10 times.
 
New Territory

After 16 seasons of competition in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Cougars enter their first season of NCAA Division II competition in 2015. CSUSM is currently in the second year of a three-year transition to full NCAA Division II membership. As a part of the transition, the Cougars will be ineligible for NCAA postseason competition in 2016.
 
New Conference
Cal State San Marcos is a part of the 13-team California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), made up of 12 CSU institutions and UC San Diego. The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II leagues in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference.
