CLAREMONT, Calif. - The outdoor season started with a bang for the Cal State San Marcos women's and men's track & field teams, as the men's distance medley relay squad won in a record-breaking performance at the Rossi Relays on Saturday. The Cougars also claimed victory in the women's 4x800 relay and six student-athletes qualified for CCAA championships.
For the second straight year the men's DMR team set a new school record at the Rossi Relays.
Justin Washington,
Aaron Hickman,
Alex Gronotte and
Trent Warren posted a time of 10:04.38 to win the event and best the previous mark by 3.52 seconds.
The women's 4x800 relay of
Charlotte Kuzminsky,
Arianna Garcia-Swantek,
Tina Girolamo and
Cristen Lane took the top spot with a time of 9:36.14, edging out The Master's College.
Kamarria Rehn,
Jasmine Williams,
Patrick Holstrom and freshmen
Domenique Barnes,
Bryce Johnson and
Joshrey Estelle each posted CCAA championship qualifying marks in their respective events.
Williams (15.31) finished second in her 100m hurdles heat and Rehn (12.61) finished third in her 100m heat to qualify for CCAA championships.
Johnson qualified in the 110m hurdles, finishing third in his heat with a time of 16.05.
In the field events, Holstrom set a new personal-best in the javelin, qualifying for CCAA championships with a throw of 182'10" (55.73m) that was good for a sixth place result.
Barnes placed ninth and hit the CCAA championship qualifier in the javelin with a throw of 113'9" (34.68m).
Estelle hit the long jump standard, finishing eighth with a leap 21'1.25" (6.43m).
The women's DMR team of Girolamo, Kuzminsky, Lane and
Natalie Rodriguez recorded a time of 12:20.70 to finish fifth overall.
Warren finished second in the 3000m with a time of 8:30.99, 4.65 seconds shy of the school record.
Steven Ing placed 10th with a time of 8:45.59.
Freshman
Nathan Hale, Jr. finished third in his 100m heat with a time of 11.28, just shy of the CCAA championship standard.
The men's 4x100 relay of
Jacob Menegos, Hale, Jr.,
Bryce Johnson and
Burtland Dixon won their heat with a time of 43.19.
Hickman,
Matt Doyle, Dixon and Hale, Jr. won their 4x400 relay heat recording a time of 3:25.92.
Next on the slate for the Cougars is the Cal State L.A. Invitational, with two days of action beginning on Friday, March 4 at
Jesse Owens Track.
