Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif.— The No. 8 Cal State San Marcos softball team split a doubleheader on the road against a tough and improved Biola squad Saturday at Freedom Field. The Cougars recorded just a single hit in the first game but still emerged as 3-2 victors, but fell 3-1 in the second game.
CSUSM had won 14 straight games against Biola entering play Saturday, but the Eagles (10-3) proved they have the bats and the pitching to be a top contender this season, led by pitcher Reba DePriest and her 0.16 ERA. The Cougars (11-3) averaged 1.25 runs per inning entering the day but managed just four runs total on the afternoon and were outhit for the first time all season.
In the first game, the Cougars got on the scoreboard early after
Caylyn Rodriguez singled, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch. Biola's CeCe Luster flipped the score with a 2-run homerun in the bottom of the frame, but CSUSM scraped together two more runs in the second inning on a pair of errors, the second of which allowed
Amy Hartwell and pinch runner
Breana Reyes to score.
The Cougars were held without a baserunner the rest of the way, but
Katie Wilkinson (7-1) took care of the rest, throwing a complete game two-hitter and striking out six Eagle batters, allowing just the two runs in the first.
The second game started out well for the Cougars as well, with freshman
Ashley Dagenais tossing four shutout innings and
Tani Leasau's RBI single in the second inning giving CSUSM a 1-0 lead. However, Biola's bats came through in the fifth inning for three runs off Wilkinson (7-2) and came out with the victory.
CSUSM now begins a 14-game homestretch beginning Wednesday, February 26 with a doubleheader against Lindenwood-Belleville. The homestretch lasts until March 18 and features two home games apiece on March 1-3
