CSUSM Holds Off Biola, 58-53, for First Win of 2014

Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team earned its first win of 2014 by hitting a series of timely shots late in the second half in a 58-53 victory over Biola on Thursday night at MiraCosta College.

Cassie Damyovich led the Cougars with 16 points, Heather Thompson notched a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, and MacKenzie Harnett came off the bench to contribute six points and 10 rebounds as CSUSM snapped a three-game slide.

The Cougars improve to 8-12 overall. Biola saw its five-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 5-11.

"It's great to be back at home.  We have to get games when we can get them because we're an independent team and most of the other schools are starting their league season in January," said CSUSM assistant coach Crystal Harris. "We've played a handful of really good teams on the road recently, so it's nice to get back here and come out with a win."

After BU pulled within one with 4:22 left, Sherika Miller made a tough move in the lane and flipped in a layup to put the Cougars up three.

Harnett picked off a pass from Adijat Adams on the Eagles' next possession and the Cougars turned it into a five-point lead, 56-51, on Damyanovich's put-back with 2:26 to play.

Adams hit a turnaround in the paint to pull within three, but Alexandria Alvarado punched back with a jumper from the left elbow to keep the CSUSM at five.

A pair of free throws by Adams made it 53-50 with 1:01 left.

The Cougars worked the ball around the perimeter to let time drip off the clock. With the shot clock winding down, Miller worked her way around the right side of the key and drew a foul with 34 seconds remaining.

She made 1-of-2, but it was enough to give the Cougars a two-possession lead.

A 3-point play from Adams gave BU a chance to keep the game alive down by three, 56-53, with seven seconds left.

However, the Cougars were able to inbound the ball cleanly out of a timeout and Lindsay Uyematsu hit a pair from the stripe to ice the game.

CSUSM will face San Diego Christian on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at MiraCosta.
