Yasukochi Takes Helm of CSUSM Women's Basketball Program

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team will have a new leader this fall as CSUSM Director of Athletics Morod Shah announced the hiring of Britinee Yasukochi as the program's next head coach on Thursday.

Becoming the Cougars' fifth head coach in program history, Yasukochi comes to CSUSM from UC San Diego, where she spent the last seven seasons as the Tritons' assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. In that time, she helped UCSD to two NCAA Tournament appearances, two Big West Tournament Championships and one CCAA Tournament Championship.

"We are so excited to have Britinee Yasukochi join our Cougar Family as the head coach of our women's basketball program," Shah said. "Britinee brings a tremendous amount of championship basketball coaching experience from winning programs to CSUSM. I am eager to watch her build a culture for our program that supports our student-athletes, our department and the entire campus community. As a fellow local North County product myself, I am excited to watch Britinee tap into her North County roots and grow connections with the community and build support for our program."

No stranger to the CCAA, Yasukochi spent three seasons as an assistant at Cal State East Bay from 2016-19 and helped the Pioneers win the CCAA Tournament in her first season. Before stopping in Hayward, she was an assistant at the University of San Francisco from 2014-16 and helped lead USF to the 2015-16 WCC Tournament Championship and its first NCAA Tournament in 20 years. Prior to USF, Yasukochi spent three seasons as video coordinator and director of basketball operations at UC Davis.

"I am truly honored and excited to join the Cal State San Marcos family," Yasukochi said. "This is a special opportunity to lead a program at a University that is deeply committed to its students, outstanding faculty and staff, and the vibrant community it is so proudly connected to. Being able to coach in a place that I proudly call home makes this an incredible privilege for my family and me."

A native of Oceanside, Yasukochi played her prep years at The Bishop's School in La Jolla and went on to play her collegiate career at Occidental College under current Tritons head coach Heidi VanDerveer.

"I am excited to build meaningful relationships with our scholar-athletes, foster a culture of excellence, compete at the highest level and develop outstanding young women," Yasukochi continued. "We look forward to building a program that our University, alumni and the North County community can be proud of."
