MERCED, Calif.—No. 20 Cal State San Marcos racked up a pair of victories Friday at the UC Merced Holiday Inn Express Volleyball Invitational, defeating West Coast Baptist in three sets and Northwest Christian in four.
CSUSM scored early and often against West Coast Baptist, racing out to a 12-2 lead against the Eagles and never looked back en route to a 25-9, 25-12, 25-12 victory.
Alyssa Hubbard, a junior transfer from Golden West CC with one kill on the season prior to Friday, shined for the Cougars with a game best 11 kills and a .527 hitting percentage in 17 attempts. She also added a team best nine digs and two service aces.
Similarly, freshman
Taylor Harris made her mark in her first major action as a Cougar. The freshman from Liberty High School in Bakersfield tallied two kills, a game-high 25 assists, and three service aces. CSUSM as a team recorded 13 aces in total, and hit .333 as a team. The Cougars held the Eagles to a -0.085 hitting percentage.
In the second game against Northwest Christian, Hubbard came through once again, tallying 10 kills and a .429 hitting percentage to help the Cougars to a 25-20, 15-25, 25-18, 25-12 victory.
Taylor DeGraaf led the Cougars with 14 kills and contributed 13 digs, while Harris added 13 digs of her own.
Kelli McLin added nine kills with a .533 hitting percentage, and
Alyssa Foster notched a game-high 41 assists. Waverly Richards added a team best 18 digs in the win.
Head coach
Andrea Leonard was pleased with the effort, saying “The team is really progressing and our depth is a huge strength for us. The girls are playing really well together.”
With the victories, CSUSM improves to 6-2 on the season heading into their final two games of the tournament Saturday. The Cougars will face Oregon Tech in the morning at 9:00am, and host UC Merced to wrap up the tournament at 2:30pm.
