The Cal State San Marcos Baseball team led for most of Thursday's game against #2 seed Jamestown, but an eighth inning rally by the Jimmies put an end to the Cougars Conference Championship ambitions.

San Marcos jumped out to an early 3-run lead in the first after a 2 RBI double by Austin Coleman and a bases loaded walk from Marcus Meraz. However, Jamestown came right back in the bottom half of the first inning to tie the score of CSUSM starter James Dykstra.

Dykstra settled in after that and ended up allowing just 1 hit the rest of the way, striking out 7 over 7 innings. CSUSM took the lead again in the second inning on a sac fly, and opened up a 6-3 lead after Trent Jemmett's 2 RBI single in the third.

Though Jamestown would close the gap to 6-4 in the fourth, the Cougars pushed the lead back to three after Jeremy Baum's opposite field double in the fifth inning.

The Cougars looked to be in control, but the wheels came off in the eighth inning when Jamestown stormed back with 5 runs on 5 hits to take the lead. The tying run came on an error with two outs, and two batters later the Jimmies brought in the winning runs on a 2 RBI triple that just stayed fair along the first base line.

Andrew Larson earned the loss, and dropped to 1-3 on the season. Seniors Trent Jemmett, Austin Coleman, and Jeremy Baum each recorded 2 RBIs in what was likely their last game at San Marcos. Fellow seniors Anthony Renteria and Mike Mecucci each reached base 3 times during the game as well. The Cougars (26-23) are not likely to receive an at-large berth to the NAIA National Tournament. The Cougars made significant strides in 2012 though, earning the first national ranking in school history when they debuted at #23 back in March.
