The #1 seed Cal State San Marcos Baseball team lost a heartbreaker in their opening game of the A.I.I. Conference Tournament, falling 3-2 in the ninth inning against #6 seed Dakota State.
The Cougars out-hit the Trojans 8-to-4, yet trailed most of the game after Dakota State hit back-to-back RBI singles in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. CSUSM cut the lead to one with a two-out RBI single by
Mark Ortivez in the 4
th inning, but stranded a number of runners in the middle innings, and 10 total for the game.
San Marcos tied the score at 2 in the bottom of the eighth inning after
Austin Coleman doubled to lead off the inning, and pinch runner
Marcus Meraz scored on an error by the shortstop. The lead did not last however, as the Trojans scored on an unearned run of their own in the ninth after a bobble and wild throw enabled the eventual winning run to cross the plate.
Trent Jemmett and
Austin Coleman each went 2-for-4 with a double in the loss.
Richard Martin went 8 1/3 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs on 4 hits. Despite the striking out 8 in a strong outing, Martin dropped to 2-2 on the season.
The Cougars will play #2 seed Jamestown at 9:00 am Thursday morning. The loser of tomorrow's game will be eliminated from the tournament. Jamestown fell 8-1 to #5 Arizona Christian in their game Wednesday.
