No. 13/13 Cougars Host CSUSM Fujikura Invitational

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 13/13 Cal State San Marcos women's golf team will host the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational on Monday, March 7 and Tuesday, March 8 at Shadowridge Golf Club in Vista. 

PREVIOUS TOURNAMENT

  • The Cougars finished eighth at Long Beach State's Gold Rush in a field that featured 11 NCAA Division I squads including No. 14/14 USC that won the tournament by 36 strokes. 
  • The Cougars finished with a 78-over 942 (302-316-324).  
  • Makenna Cabardo was CSUSM's top finisher after tying for 26th with a three-round total of 16-over 232 (72-80-80).

THE CSUSM FUJIKURA INVITATIONAL BREAKDOWN

  • This marks the third time the Cougars have hosted the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational.
  • In 2020, CSUSM won the tournament by 38 strokes with a 2-over 578. Academy of Art took runner-up honors with a 40-over 616 while Holy Names placed third with a 41-over 617.
  • The Cougars went 1-2-3 at the 2020 tournament with Jaime Jacob taking home individual medalist honors after carding a 7-under 137 (68-69). Savannah Magallon collected runner-up honors with an even-par 144 (71-73) and Claire Hogle tied for third with a 4-over 148 (73-75).
  • This year's tournament features five nationally-ranked teams including No. 1/1 Lynn.
  • In the inaugural CSUSM Women's Golf Fujikura Invitational, then-No. 5 Barry recorded the team victory with a 10-over 586, defeating then-No. 1 Dallas Baptist by 12 strokes. The Cougars place third with a 23-over 599.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

INSIDE THE EAGLE INVITATIONAL

  • This marks the first time the Cougars will play in Biola's Eagle Invitational. 
  • This marks the second time Biola has hosted the Eagle Invitational with the first being in 2021. 
  • In 2021, six teams competed and Point Loma edged out Biola by one stroke with a 43-over 619. Biola's Brady Turnquist took home individual medalist honors after recording a 4-over 148 (71-77). 
  • This is also the first time the Cougars have ever competed at The Grand Golf Club which features San Diego's only Tom Fazio-designed course.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM only has two returners from the 2019-20 team.
  • With the last two seasons combined, six will be wearing Cougar Blue for the first time this year.
  • Prior to shutting down their season due to the pandemic, the then-No. 12/14 Cougars dominated the field of 14 at the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational with a 38-stroke victory.
  • CSUSM won five of the six tournaments they competed at in 2019-20.
  • 2019 NCAA Division II National Champion Jaime Jacob was not able to defend her title due to the NCAA cancelling the remaining of the 2020 season.

 

THE HUTTON FILE

  • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
  • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob. 
  • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019.
  • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged member of the NCAA Division II in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
