Cougars See School Record, NCAA Provisional at Season's First Outdoor Meet

WALNUT, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's track & field team began its 2024 outdoor season with a school record performance and five top-10 program marks at Mt. San Antonio College's Kamaka Open on Saturday.
 
TOP PERFORMANCES
  • Kalathan Laiwa-McKay broke the school record in the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 17.04 meters. His mark was .93 better than his previous best and surpassed Ndoto Strong's record of 16.85 meters set in 2019.
  • The Cougars posted three top-10 performances in the hammer throw as Juan Leyva had the second-best toss in program history at 51.69 meters while Laiwa-McKay had the fifth-best throw at 50.10 meters. Will Prouty tallied the ninth-best mark at 47.55 meters.
  • Prouty later tallied the ninth-best discus throw in program history at 41.90 meters.
  • Jonh Saracay was the top Cougar in the long jump at 6.13 meters and had top billing for CSUSM in the high jump at 1.90 meters.
  • Shaun Katje posted a triple jump mark of 12.91 meters.

CSUSM will compete in Long Beach State's Beach Opener on Friday and Saturday in Long Beach.
