RV CSUSM Embarks On Final Regular-Season Road Trip of of 2023-24

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The RV Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (18-4, 15-2 CCAA) will begin its final road trip of the regular season this week, a five-game stint that will begin with stops at Cal State Dominguez Hills (12-11, 9-8 CCAA) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Cal State LA (12-10, 9-8 CCAA) on Saturday at 1 p.m. 


LAST WEEKEND

  • The Cougars took care of business last weekend in their final home games of 2023-24. 
  • CSUSM completed season series sweeps over Cal State Monterey and Stanislaus State with 68-56 and 76-59 victories, respectively. 
  • In Saturday's game against Stan State, Jordan Vasquez broke the single-game record in rebounds with 21 boards. 


COUGAR FACTS

  • With five games remaining in the regular season, the Cougars hold a three-game lead over second-place Chico State. 
  • If CSUSM wins both at CSUDH and CSULA, the Cougars will be guaranteed at least a share of the CCAA Regular-Season Championship with three games remaining in the season. 
  • CSUSM continues to lead the CCAA in scoring defense (49th in DII) by holding opponents to 59.1 points per game.
  • The Cougars moved into first in free throw percentage (38th in DII) at 75.7%. 
  • CSUSM's 42.4 field-goal percentage and 36.4 field-goal percentage defense both rank second in the CCAA.

  • In points per game, Gallegos is fourth and Vasquez is eighth with averages of 15.9 and 15.0, respectively. 
  • Mina Tameilau ranks third in the CCAA with an 83.1 free throw percentage. 
  • Gallegos ranks fifth in assist/turnover ratio at 1.51. 
  • Vasquez is 16 points away from joining CSUSM's 1000-point club. She has already compiled 1,579 points in her five years of playing collegiate basketball.

THURSDAY AT CSUDH

  • CSUDH is in a three-way tie for fourth place with Cal State LA and Cal State San Bernardino. 
  • The Toros went 2-0 last weekend with wins over Cal State East Bay (88-83) and San Francisco State (81-54).   
  • This season, the Toros are 9-3 when playing at home. 
  • CSUSM defeated CSUDH earlier this season in The Sports Center by a score of 67-62 with Miinia Tameilau leading the Cougars with 21 points.

SATURDAY MATINEE AT CSULA

  • After falling to last-place Cal State Monterey Bay on Feb. 3, the Golden Eagles came back with a vengeance with an 88-42 victory over San Francisco State last Thursday. 
  • CSULA followed that victory with an 89-63 win over Cal State East Bay on Saturday. 
  • The Golden Eagles enter the week in a three-way tie for fourth place alongside CSUDH and Cal State San Bernardino. 
  • Prior to hosting CSUSM on Saturday, the Golden Eagles will host Sonoma State on Thursday. 
  • The Cougars opened CCAA play this season against the Golden Eagles in The Sports Center, walking away with a 73-43 victory over CSULA. 
  • The Golden Eagles are rocking the highest 3-point field-goal percentage and 3-pointer per game in the CCAA at 35.6 (17th in DII) and 7.8 (21st in DII), respectively.
  • CSULA ranks second in the CCAA in bench points per game at 25.0. 
  • Lily Buggs and Nicole Flennaugh are both averaging 12.2 points per game. 
  • CSUSM is 12-5 in the all-time series and has won the last 11 consecutive meetings against the Golden Eagles.

  • CSUSM began the season ranked No. 22 in the WBCA Division II Top 25 Preseason Poll.

  • Nine Cougars return from the 2022-23 team, including All-CCAA first-teamer Jordan Vasquez, second-teamer Mina Tameilau and honorable mention selection Charity Gallegos
  • CSUSM is joined this year by four transfers, including Camille Johnson (Sonoma State), Rose Morse (UC Riverside), Ava Ranson (Montana State) and Truitt Reilly (Western Washington). 
  • Closing out the Cougars' roster of 16 are freshmen Kaitlyn Beall (Dream City Christian School), Maddie Leiva (Santa Margarita Catholic HS) and Jade Ramirez (Pinewood HS).  


THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her ninth season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its 13th season of existence.
  • Last season, CSUSM made it deepest run as a NCAA Division II program in 2022-23 by making it all the way to the NCAA West Regional final. The Cougars won the program's first-ever CCAA Tournament Championship. 
  • In 2021-22, Jimenez earned her third career and second consecutive CCAA Coach of the Year honor. She previously earned the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars clinched their second consecutive CCAA Regular-Season Championship in 2021-22. 
  • After CSUSM's 2019-20 inaugural NCAA Division II West Regional appearance was cut short due to COVID-19, the Cougars were finally able to make their debut in the national tournament in 2021-22 as the No. 4 seed and followed it up with a No. 3 seed in 2022-23. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament three times, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by back-to-back finals appearance in 2019-20 and 2021-22.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 261-148 (.638) in her 15 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • In her ninth season at CSUSM, Jimenez has tallied a record of 136-77 (.638).
