No. 5 CSUSM Opens CCAA Play at Stanislaus State on Adjusted Schedule

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 5 Cal State San Marcos softball (6-1) will kick off CCAA play this week at Stanislaus State (0-5) on a adjusted schedule due to impending inclement weather in the forecast this weekend. The Cougars will now face the Warriors in a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 3 p.m. and a Friday twinbill starting at 12 p.m. 

LAST TIME OUT
  • After rainouts all last week, the Cougars finally had their official home opener on Sunday when they hosted then-No. 14 Adelphi. 
  • CSUSM recorded a 2-1 victory in game one behind the ace pitching of Jayline Sloss
  • After registering a save in the first game, CSUSM starter Savannah Coyle tossed eight shutout innings as the Cougars capitalized on a passed ball to collect the 1-0 nightcap win to clinch the sweep. 

CCAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK 
  • Savannah Coyle earned her sixth career CCAA Pitcher of the Week honor on Monday after going nine innings over two appearances, allowing three hits and no runs. She walked only one and struck out four. 
  • Coyle collected her second save of 2024 after forcing a pop-up before beginning a double-play punch out in game one. 
  • In the nightcap, Coyle out-pitched the 2023 NFCA Division II Pitcher of the Year, going the distance to earn the shutout with eight innings in the circle. The junior from Oceanside retired the side in five of the eight innings, with two of the other innings ending on double plays. 

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Cougars reclaimed the No. 5 ranking in the first official NFCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll of 2024. 
  • In their first seven games of the season, the Cougars have already tallied five double plays, ranking them first in the CCAA and eighth in Division II. 
  • CSUSM is one of two teams in the CCAA that has recorded two shutouts this season with Cal Poly Humboldt. 
  • Madison Waymire is averaging a CCAA-leading 1.43 runs per game. 
  • Savannah Coyle's three doubles rank No. 1 in the CCAA. 
  • Jayline Sloss has accumulated a conference-high four victories this season.

INSIDE THE WARRIORS

  • Stan State has started the season at 0-5 with two of the losses by one run and two by two runs.
  • At the CUI Kickoff Classic, the Warriors opened the season with a 3-2 loss to then-No. 25 Northwest Nazarene before falling 4-2 to then-No. 14 Concordia University Irvine and 9-1 (mercy-rule) to Western Washington the next day. 
  • Last weekend Stan State dropped 5-4 and 3-1 decisions to Saint Martin's and Dominican, respectively, at the North Bay Challenge hosted by Dominican. 
  • The Cougars and Warriors have met 27 previous times with Stan State leading the all-time series at 15-12. 
  • CSUSM has won eight of the last nine meetings against Stan State. 
  • The Cougars swept day one of the series last season with a 4-3 win followed by an 8-0 mercy-rule shutout. CSUSM dropped day two's twinbill opener 3-0 before clinching the series win with a 1-0 victory. 
  • In 2023, the Warriors finished in last place in the CCAA standings with a 7-28 conference record, concluding the season with a 12-32 overall record. 
  • Senior shortstop Mikaela Ferreira was the lone Warrior featured on the 2024 CCAA Softball Preseason Watchlist. Ferreira was the 2023 CCAA Newcomer of the Year and an All-CCAA first-teamer. 
  • The Warriors were picked to finish second-to-last in the 2024 CCAA Preseason Softball Coaches Poll.


COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM has 14 returners for the 2024 season, including 2023 All-CCAA second-team honorees Savannah CoyleMadison WaymireJillian AlbayatiPaige Donnelly and Gianna Lombardi.
  • The Cougars have nine newcomers this season with six freshmen and three transfers.
  • Athletically, the Cougars are made up of six redshirt juniors, six true juniors, one redshirt sophomore, four sophomores and six true freshmen.
  • CSUSM was picked to finish second in the 2023 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • The Cougars' 51-game schedule includes 26 home contests, 23 road games and two neutral games

THE EWING FILE

  • 2022 CCAA Coach of the Year Stef Ewing enters her sixth season in charge of the Cougar softball season and has a 103-79 (.566) overall record as a head coach.
  • Ewing and Assistant Coach A.J. Robinson were named the 2023 NFCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year. 
  • In 2023, the Cougars won the school's first West Regional team title and punched their ticket to the NCAA Division II National Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee. 
  • In her five seasons, she has coached two NFCA All-American third-team selections, 13 All-CCAA honorees (four first-team selections), a CCAA Newcomer of the Year and CCAA Freshman of the Year. 
  • Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17, 2019, as the Cougars recorded a walk-off 5-4 victory over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
  • The 2024 squad's first win of the season was Ewing's 100th as a coach, a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Chaminade at the CUI Kickoff Classic on Feb. 2. 
  • She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular-Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.
