LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's track & field team began its 2023 season with three top-10 program times on Friday and Saturday at Long Beach State's Beach Opener at Jack Rose Track.
 
TOP PERFORMANCES

• Kalathan Laiwa-McKay had the second-best shot put mark in team history at 14.90 meters.
• Juan Leyva had the fourth-best hammer throw mark in program history at 50.41 meters. Will Prouty set a new PR in the event with the ninth-best throw in team history at 42.77 meters.
• Nick Melanese took second in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:51.43 and was the fastest Division II runner in the field.
• Melanese later took third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.36 – just .08 off his personal best.
• Isaac Muanza tied for fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.96 meters.
• Muanza later took seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 13.12.
• Kenyon Riley was the top Cougar in the 400-meter dash at 51.95.
• Nathan Valencia and Hayden Sumner finished back-to-back in the 400-meter hurdles with times of 59.54 and 59.55, respectively.
• Ruben Piña finished up the individual events for the Cougars in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:37.95.
