Top-Seeded Cougars Host CSUDH in Super West Regional This Week

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The top-seeded Cal State San Marcos softball team (44-12) will host sixth-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills (39-20) in the NCAA Division II West Super Regional in a best of three series this week. Game one is slated for Thursday at noon and game two is set for Friday at 11 a.m. The if-necessary game is scheduled for Friday at approximately 1:30 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars won four consecutive elimination games to advance to the Super Regionals. 
  • After dropping a 4-0 decision against Northwest Nazarene in the opening game of the West Regionals, the Cougars took down Cal State Monterey Bay, 5-0, before getting a bit of revenge with a 4-0 win over NNU on Friday.
  • On Saturday, the Cougars recorded back-to-back wins over Sonoma State to keep their season alive. CSUSM rallied back after being down 3-2 in the 10th inning in game one to force a second game with a 4-3 victory. CSUSM secured the second game by jumping out quickly, leading to a 3-1 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM is in the midst of its best season since moving to NCAA Division II in 2016.
  • The Cougars put together a 14-game win streak this season – March 11-April 9 – as well as a 13-game win streak – Feb. 5-25 .
  • The Cougars are supporting a .319 batting average, the highest in the CCAA and 38th best in the nation. 
  • CSUSM's pitching has been outstanding as well with a 2.24 ERA, ranking second behind Chico State (2.13) in the CCAA and 31st in the nation. 
  • The CSUSM pitching staff has held its opponents to a .229 batting average, the second lowest in the conference. 
  • The Cougar defense converted four double plays in the series finale at Cal State Dominguez Hills, tying for the most by a Division II team this season. 
  • Paige Donnelly and Bianca Gutierrez are No. 1 and No. 3 in the CCAA in batting average with .424 and .405 clips, respectively.
  • Donnelly also leads the CCAA with a .476 on-base percentage (89th in D2),  56 RBIs (23rd in D2) and 1.12 RBIs per game (19th in D2). 
  • Gutierrez is the toughest player to strikeout out in the CCAA with just five strikeouts in her 168 at-bats this season – striking out every 33.6 at bats and ranking her 13th in Division II.
  • Savannah Coyle has retaken the title of the CCAA's ERA leader, boasting a 1.39 ERA. Jayline Sloss is ranked fourth in the CCAA with a 1.95 ERA.

WEST SUPER REGIONAL PREVIEW

  • For softball, the NCAA splits each regional into two pods with the winner of each pod advancing to West SUPR Regional, which features a best-of-three series against each other the following week to determine the regional champion.
  • CSUSM won its own pod while Cal State Dominguez Hills pulled off an upset in the Concordia University Irvine pod.
  • This marks CSUSM's first trip to the West Super Regional while CSUDH is making its third appearance. 
  • The Toros made it to the West Super Regional in 2012, falling in three games to then-NCAA Division II member UC San Diego. The next season, CSUDH returned to the Super Regional only to fall in two consecutive games to Humboldt State. 
  • The all-time series between these two teams is knotted at 14-all.
  • This season, the Cougars and the Toros played each other four times in the regular season.
  • CSUSM went 1-3 in Carson this year, falling 4-3 in eight innings in game one before recording a 3-0 shutout in the nightcap. In the Saturday doubleheader, the Cougars dropped a 3-2 eight-inning game before falling 5-4 in the series finale.
  • CSUDH is batting .291, which ranks the Toros fifth among the CCAA schools.
  • The CSUDH pitching staff has only hit five batters, tying with Malone and Winston-Salem for the fewest in NCAA Division II.
  • Alyssa Olague is leading the nation in games started (37) and appearances(47) in the circle. She ranks fifth in the nation with 230.1 innings pitched while supporting a 2.52 ERA.

NFCA FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR FINALIST

  • The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) revealed Wednesday that Cal State San Marcos standout Paige Donnelly has been named the West Region finalist for the 2022 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Freshman of the Year award.
  • Donnelly is one of eight freshmen from across the country to be honored, and the winner will be announced next Wednesday.

CSUSM RACKS UP ALL-WEST REGION AWARDS

  • First baseman Paige Donnelly was named D2CCA All-West Region Player of the Year.
  • Donnelly, pitcher/utility player Savannah Coyle and outfielder Bianca Gutierrez on the D2CCA and NFCA All-West Regional first team. 
  • Starting pitcher Jayline Sloss was named to the D2CCA and NFCA All-West Regional second team.
     

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After seeing their 2020 season canceled after 19 games and sitting out the entire 2021 season, CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 season in Marissa Alvarez, Nikki Andelin, Zoe Ballen, Mayca Brown, Bianca Gutierrez, Gianna Lombardi, Kayla Mack, Sabrina Morales, Klarissa Munoz, Jamie Ponce and Ryann Steiner. 
  • Seven Cougars will take the field in Cougar blue for the first time this season - Paige Donnelly, Rachel Jardim, Mackenzie Kestler, Sammie Olivo, Jackie Ramirez, Morgan Salgado and Madison Waymire.
  • Joining the team in 2022 as true freshmen are Aneesa Arredondo, Savannah Coyle, Makenzie Guiliano, Delaney Prater and Jayline Sloss.
  • CSUSM was picked to finish eighth in the 2022 CCAA Softball Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE EWING FILE

  • Head coach Stef Ewing enters her fourth season in charge of the Cougar softball season, finishing the 2020 shorten season due to COVID-19 pandemic with a 7-12 record that ended with an exhibition game against Team USA that was preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  • Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
  • She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.
