No. 8 Cougars Set for Top-10 Showdown at No. 2 CUI

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The two top West Region softball teams, the No. 8 Cal State San Marcos Cougars (31-3) and the No. 2 Concordia University Irvine Eagles (38-3), will square off on Saturday in Irvine with a doubleheader beginning at noon.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars recorded their third consecutive sweep (fourth of the season) two weeks ago against San Francisco State by scores of 8-1, 7-6 (9 inn.), 3-0 and 11-1 (6 inn.).
  • In both Friday and Saturday's nightcaps, the Cougars recorded walk-off home runs to defeat the Gators.
  • After SF State rallied in the top of the seventh to even the game at 4-all on March 25, the Gators took their first lead of the game on a 2-RBI double by Dani Guerrera in the ninth. The Cougars answered in the bottom of the frame with Morgan Salgado's three-run homer to left to collect the doubleheader sweep.
  • In the Saturday nightcap, the Cougars broke up a 1-all tie in the third with four runs followed by two more runs in the fourth. A Ryann Steiner grand slam in the sixth ended the game early due to the mercy rule to make it 11-1 and to secure the series sweep.
  • CSUSM tallied 29 runs while holding the Gators to just eight in the series.

Two Cougars Named to 2022 NFCA DII National Player & Pitcher of the Year Top 50 List

  • Redshirt freshman Paige Donnelly and freshman Savannah Coyle were named to the 2022 Schutt Sports/NFCA DII National Player & Pitcher of the Year Top 50 list.
  • Donnelly is leading the CCAA in six categories – batting average (.436), doubles (12), doubles per game (.36), RBIs (39), RBIs per game (1.18) and slugging percentage (.723). The Poway native has recorded multi-RBIs in a team-leading 12 games, including two five-RBI games.
  • Coyle is already a two-time CCAA Pitcher of the Week honoree and leads the conference in ERA (0.80), WHIP (0.77) and hits allowed per seven innings (4.43). The Oceanside native has acquired a NCAA Division II-leading five saves.
  • Coyle has accumulated a 13-1 record in 87.0 innings, limiting opponents to a .172 batting average. She has registered 85 strikeouts while walking only 12 batters.

  • The Player of the Year award was created in 2015 to honor the outstanding athletic achievements among softball student-athletes throughout NCAA Division II. In 2019, the Association expanded the award to include a Player and Pitcher of the Year. The list is compiled and the award is voted on by the elected members of the NFCA Division II All-American Committee with one head coach representing each of the eight NCAA regions. To be eligible, a student-athletes' head coach must be a member.
  • The Top 25 finalists for the 2022 Schutt Sports / NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Year awards will be announced on May 5. A student-athlete does not have to be on the Top 50 list to be considered for the Top 25. The winner of each award will be announced on June 2, following the conclusion of the 2022 season.
