No. 8 CSUSM to Conclude Regular Season at Cal Poly Humboldt

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 8 Cal State San Marcos Cougars (36-8, 25-7 CCAA) will close their regular-season campaign this weekend, traveling to Cal Poly Humboldt (13-36, 6-26 CCAA) to compete in a four-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. before a Saturday twinbill at 11 a.m. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars tallied a pair of three-hit shutouts in the opening and closing games of their four-game series with Cal State Monterey Bay last weekend. 
  • Savannah Coyle picked up the win in Friday's 6-0 series opener while Zoe Ballen recorded her first complete game shutout in the 8-0 mercy-ruled series finale on Saturday. 
  • Prior to last Saturday's game, CSUSM honored its three seniors - Nikki Andelin, Kayla Mack and Jamie Ponce. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Cougars held steady at the top of the NCAA Division II West Regional rankings at No. 1 in the second poll of 2022, announced on Wednesday. Click here for the full release. 
  • CSUSM is in the midst of its best season since moving to NCAA Division II in 2016.
  • With one conference series remaining, the Cougars remain on top of the CCAA standing with a one-game lead over second-place Chico State.
  • The Cougars saw their season-best 14-game win streak come to an end on April 9 against CSUDH.
  • After beginning the season 1-1, the Cougars went on a 13-game win streak (Feb. 5-25), their pervious longest since moving to NCAA Division II. The program's record is 22 consecutive wins set between Feb. 18 - March 21, 2012 when CSUSM competed at the NAIA level.
  • The Cougars are supporting a .326 batting average, the highest in the CCAA and 31st best in the nation. 
  • CSUSM's pitching has been outstanding as well with a 2.16 ERA in 277.1 innings, ranking third behind Chico State (1.94) and Cal State Monterey Bay (2.11) in the CCAA and 26th in the nation. 
  • The CSUSM pitching staff has held its opponents to a .228 batting average, the second lowest in the conference. 
  • The Cougar defense converted four double plays in the series finale at Cal State Dominguez Hills, tying for the most by a Division II team this season. 
  • Savannah Coyle is one of five pitchers in all of NCAA Division II to record five saves this season. 
  • Coyle leads the CCAA in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 6.5 and ranks 10th in the nation. 
  • Three Cougars are featured in the top four spots in batting average in the CCAA statistics. Paige Donnelly leads the conference with a .450 batting average, followed by Bianca Gutierrez in the second spot with a ..421 clip. Savannah Coyle broke into the top 5 at No. 4 with a .404 batting average. 
  • Paige Donnelly also leads the CCAA with 0.36 doubles per game (43rd in D2),  51 RBIs (16th in D2), 1.21 RBIs per game (16th in D2) and .733 slugging percentage (58th in D2). 
  • Bianca Gutierrez is the toughest player to strikeout out in the CCAA with just three strikeouts in her 133 at-bats this season – striking out every 44.3 at bats and ranking her seventh in Division II.
  • The Cougars have the toughest schedule overall among the CCAA schools and rank 33rd in the nation.

BREAKDOWN OF THE JACKS

  • The Jacks sit in last place in the CCAA standings with a 6-26 record and have been eliminated from the possibility of competing in the CCAA Tournament.
  • Humboldt is 0-12 when playing at home this season, being swept by then-No. 16 Chico State, Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino on their own turf.
  • The Jacks have the worst ERA (6.04) and fielding percentage (.928) in the CCAA. They have also hit a conference-high 53 batters this season, the third highest in all of Division II.
  • Humboldt is averaging a CCAA-high 10.55 hits per seven innings.
  • Micaela Harris leads the Jacks in batting average (.399), slugging percentage (.620), runs scored (52), hits (65) and stolen bases (47).
  • Harris' 47 stolen bases rank second in Division II.
  • The Jacks were picked to finish seventh in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Softball Coaches Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After seeing their 2020 season canceled after 19 games and sitting out the entire 2021 season, CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 season in Marissa Alvarez, Nikki Andelin, Zoe Ballen, Mayca Brown, Bianca Gutierrez, Gianna Lombardi, Kayla Mack, Sabrina Morales, Klarissa Munoz, Jamie Ponce and Ryann Steiner. 
  • Seven Cougars will take the field in Cougar blue for the first time this season - Paige Donnelly, Rachel Jardim, Mackenzie Kestler, Sammie Olivo, Jackie Ramirez, Morgan Salgado and Madison Waymire.
  • Joining the team in 2022 as true freshmen are Aneesa Arredondo, Savannah Coyle, Makenzie Guiliano, Delaney Prater and Jayline Sloss.
  • CSUSM was picked to finish eighth in the 2022 CCAA Softball Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE EWING FILE

  • Head coach Stef Ewing enters her second fourth in charge of the Cougar softball season, finishing the 2020 shorten season due to COVID-19 pandemic with a 7-12 record that ended with an exhibition game against Team USA that was preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  • Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
  • She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.
