Cougars Play Four-Game CCAA Series at CSUSB This Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos softball team (16-2, 7-1 CCAA) will travel to Cal State San Bernardino (6-9, 2-6 CCAA) this weekend for a four-game conference series at CSUSB Softball Field. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars took three of four from CCAA preseason runner-up favorite Sonoma State last weekend, splitting Friday's doubleheader (3-1, 2-5) before taking both ends of Saturday's doubleheader (6-4, 1-0). 
  • CSUSM collected a series sweep over Simon Fraser in a midweek three-game series with scores of 24-8, 6-5 and 10-2 with the first and third games ending by mercy rule. 
  • Jayline Sloss recorded two wins including a shutout against SSU, only allowing one run on four hits over 13 innings while striking out six.
  • Paige Donnelly led CSUSM's offense with a .333 batting average, tallying four hits with three doubles and three RBIs.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM is off to its best start since moving to NCAA Division II in 2016.
  • The Cougars ended their win streak at 13 games, their longest since moving to NCAA Division II. The program's record is 22 consecutive wins set between Feb. 18 - March 21, 2012 when CSUSM competed at the NAIA level.
  • CSUSM is supporting a .349 batting average, the highest in the CCAA and 18th best in the nation of teams with 10 or more games played. 
  • CSUSM's pitching has been outstanding as well with a 1.95 ERA in 122.1 innings, ranking second behind Cal State Monterey Bay in the CCAA and 14th in the nation (teams <75 IP). 
  • Savannah Coyle's four saves lead all of NCAA Division II. 
  • Donnelly leads the CCAA with a .867 slugging percentage, ranking 26th in Division II (<30 AB)

CSUSB BREAKDOWN

  • The Cougars and Coyotes have faced each other a total of 25 times since 2007. San Bernardino leads the series 21-4.
  • The two teams met in 2020 right before the season was canceled in San Bernardino. The Cougars prevented a CCAA series sweep with an 18-11 win in the nightcap of the Feb. 14th game.
  • Last weekend, the Coyotes were swept by then-No. 21 Chico State on the road. CSUSB was outscored 17-6 and was shutout in one of the four games.
  • The Coyotes split their CCAA opening weekend series against Cal State East Bay taking the first game of both doubleheaders (3-0, 8-7) before dropping each nightcap (1-2, 3-14).
  • CSUSB has the worst batting average (.233) and slugging percentage (.317) as well as double (.20) and triples (0.13) per game average in the CCAA.
  • Bailey Wallace is leading CSUSB's offense with a .341 batting average, 14 hits and six doubles.
  • The Coyotes were picked to finish sixth in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Softball Coaches Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After seeing their 2020 season canceled after 19 games and sitting out the entire 2021 season, CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 season in Marissa Alvarez, Nikki Andelin, Zoe Ballen, Mayca Brown, Bianca Gutierrez, Gianna Lombardi, Kayla Mack, Sabrina Morales, Klarissa Munoz, Jamie Ponce and Ryann Steiner. 
  • Seven Cougars will take the field in Cougar blue for the first time this season - Paige Donnelly, Rachel Jardim, Mackenzie Kestler, Sammie Olivo, Jackie Ramirez, Morgan Salgado and Madison Waymire.
  • Joining the team in 2022 as true freshmen are Aneesa Arredondo, Savannah Coyle, Makenzie Guiliano, Delaney Prater and Jayline Sloss.
  • CSUSM was picked to finish eighth in the 2022 CCAA Softball Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE EWING FILE

  • Head coach Stef Ewing enters her second fourth in charge of the Cougar softball season, finishing the 2020 shorten season due to COVID-19 pandemic with a 7-12 record that ended with an exhibition game against Team USA that was preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  • Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
  • She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.
