RV Cougars Host Cal State East Bay This Weekend

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The RV Cal State San Marcos softball team (19-3, 10-2 CCAA) hosts Cal State East Bay (14-7, 8-4 CCAA) this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at noon before closing out the series with a Saturday twinbill at 11 a.m. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars took three of four at Cal State San Bernardino last weekend, sweeping Friday's doubleheader (4-1, 2-0) before splitting Saturday's twinbill (12-3, 5-10). 
  • CSUSM outscored the Coyotes 23-14. 
  • Savannah Coyle picked up her first CCAA Pitcher of the Week honor (see below)
  • Paige Donnelly led CSUSM's offense with a .500 batting average, going 5-for-10 with nine RBIs and a grand slam. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM is off to its best start since moving to NCAA Division II in 2016.
  • After beginning the season 1-1, the Cougars went on a 13-game win streak, their longest since moving to NCAA Division II. The program's record is 22 consecutive wins set between Feb. 18 - March 21, 2012 when CSUSM competed at the NAIA level.
  • CSUSM is one conference win away from tying the program record for CCAA wins in a season. In 2017, the Cougars won 11 CCAA games and followed it with back-to-back 10-conference win seasons. Just 12 conference games in, the Cougars are 10-2 with their sights set on passing the program record. 
  • The Cougars are supporting a .343 batting average, the highest in the CCAA and 18th best in the nation of teams with 15 or more games played. 
  • CSUSM's pitching has been outstanding as well with a 1.95 ERA in 122.1 innings, ranking third in the CCAA and 17th in the nation (teams >100 IP). 
  • Savannah Coyle's four saves continue to lead all of NCAA Division II. 
  • Donnelly leads the CCAA with a .867 slugging percentage, ranking 24th in Division II (<30 AB)

CSUEB BREAKDOWN

  • The Cougars have dominated the Pioneers in the all-time series, racking up an 11-3 record since CSUSM joined the conference in 2016.
  • In 2019, CSUSM recorded the program's first-ever CCAA sweep when the Cougars collected four victories from the Pioneers in the Bay Area by scores of 3-2, 9-4, 9-3 and 4-3.
  • Last weekend, the Pioneers earned a series split at then-No. 20 Cal State Monterey Bay, dropping the first game of both doubleheaders (2-3, 0-10) before rebounding with a pair of wins (2-1, 5-4).
  • CSUEB began the CCAA season with a series split at Cal State San Bernardino before sweeping Cal Poly Humboldt at home the following weekend.
  • The Pioneers rank last in the CCAA in doubles per game (1.05) as well as double plays (2).
  • CSUEB is second in the conference and sixth in the nation in hit by pitches with 23 this season. Sarah Fukushima leads the nation with 11 hit by pitches.
  • The Pioneers are currently third in the CCAA standings with a 8-4 conference record. CSUSM and Chico State are tied for first at 10-2. 
  • The Pioneers were picked to finish last in the 2022 CCAA Preseason Softball Coaches Poll.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After seeing their 2020 season canceled after 19 games and sitting out the entire 2021 season, CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 season in Marissa Alvarez, Nikki Andelin, Zoe Ballen, Mayca Brown, Bianca Gutierrez, Gianna Lombardi, Kayla Mack, Sabrina Morales, Klarissa Munoz, Jamie Ponce and Ryann Steiner. 
  • Seven Cougars will take the field in Cougar blue for the first time this season - Paige Donnelly, Rachel Jardim, Mackenzie Kestler, Sammie Olivo, Jackie Ramirez, Morgan Salgado and Madison Waymire.
  • Joining the team in 2022 as true freshmen are Aneesa Arredondo, Savannah Coyle, Makenzie Guiliano, Delaney Prater and Jayline Sloss.
  • CSUSM was picked to finish eighth in the 2022 CCAA Softball Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE EWING FILE

  • Head coach Stef Ewing enters her second fourth in charge of the Cougar softball season, finishing the 2020 shorten season due to COVID-19 pandemic with a 7-12 record that ended with an exhibition game against Team USA that was preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  • Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
  • She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.
