RV/No. 16 Cougars Begin Final Regular-Season Homestand

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV/No. 16 Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (15-2, 13-1 CCAA) will begin its final regular-season homestand this week. The Cougars will kickoff a four-game series in The Sports Center with Cal State San Bernardino (7-13, 4-10 CCAA) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before hosting Cal Poly Pomona (6-12, 5-9 CCAA) on Saturday at 1 p.m. 

 

The CSUSM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is holding its annual food drive hold Feb. 10-17  benefiting the Cougar Pantry and the San Diego Food Bank . All fans in attendance who bring three food items will receive free admission to Thursday's and Saturday's games as well as the game next Thursday, Feb. 17 against Stanislaus State. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars handed then-No. 24/16 and previous CCAA leader Cal State East Bay its first conference loss of the season, taking down the Pioneers 76-54 in Hayward last Thursday.
  • CSUSM followed up Thursday's win with a 72-61 victory at Cal State Dominguez Hills to complete the series sweep over the Toros.
  • With the win over the Pioneers, the Cougars now have sole possession of first place in the CCAA standings with a .929 win percentage. CSUEB (16-2, 11-1 CCAA) sits in second place after missing two games due to COVID protocol and has a .917 win percentage.
  • Jordan Vasquez was named D2CIDA National Player of the Week, becoming CSUSM's first student-athlete to earn a national weekly honor during the NCAA Division II era.
  • Vasquez also picked up her second CCAA Player of the Week honor after collecting her fifth and sixth double-doubles of the season. (see below)

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • In the latest D2SIDA Top 25 Poll, CSUSM jumped up to No. 20 and is still receiving votes (one spot out of the top 25) in the WBCA Division II Top 25 Poll.  
  • CSUSM leaped over Cal State East Bay to take the No. 3 spot in the D2SIDA West Region poll this week. The Pioneers (16-2, 11-1 CCAA) moved down to No. 4 while Stanislaus State (11-6, 6-5 CCAA) slid down to the No. 10 spot. 
  • The Cougars have tied the program's longest winning streak at 11, matching the one set in 2019-20 that led to a share of the CCAA Regular-Season Title.
  • CSUSM's nine consecutive victories on the road is the best in the program's 11-season history.
  • Hackson continues to lead the CCAA in scoring, averaging 16.1 points per game.
  • With her five steals this past weekend, Hackson raised her CSUSM career total to 124 and is second all-time in the record books. In just her two years at CSUSM, Sarah Jackson (2011-13) recorded 147 steals.
  • Earlier this season, Hackson became CSUSM's all-time career leader in made free throws and moved up to 230 made buckets at the charity strike.
  • The Cougars’ 1.16 assist-turnover ratio ranks on top of the CCAA and 17th in the nation.
  • CSUSM continues to lead the CCAA and now ranks 38th in Division II in field-goal percentage at 44.0. 
  • The Cougars are dishing out a conference-leading 16.2 assists per game, ranking 21st in Division II.
  • Three Cougars are ranked in the CCAA's top 5 in field goal percentage with Vasquez the conference leader at 57.1%, followed by third-ranked Hackson at 45.6% and fifth-ranked Dynnah Buckner at 44.8%.
  • Outscoring their opponents by 14.6 points per game, the Cougars have the best scoring margin in the CCAA and rank 25th in the nation.
  • The Cougars have been performing well at the free throw line this season with a conference-best 76.6%, good enough for 30th in Division II. 
  • Kelsey Forrester moved up two spots to seventh in the nation with a 45.6 3-point field-goal percentage.

THURSDAY AGAINST THE COYOTES

  • The Cougars brought home a 75-48 victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Jan. 22. Buckner had a team-high 15 points while Hackson chipped in 13 points.
  • CSUSM tallied a season-best 21 assists on 28 field goals in San Bernardino.
  • The Cougars are 6-3 all time against CSUSB and have won the last four meetings between the two teams.
  • In The Sports Center, San Marcos is 1-3 against the Coyotes.
  • The Coyotes have lost six of their last seven games with their one victory (55-46) coming at Stanislaus State on Feb. 3.
  • CSUSB is coming off a 73-51 loss at Chico State last Saturday. The Coyotes shot 0-of-14 from the field in the first quarter against the Wildcats before ending the day with a 32.7% (17-of-52).
  • The Coyotes are leading the CCAA in blocked shots per game, averaging 3.3 per game. Mia Dufresne is second in the conference with a 1.25 per game average.
  • CSUSB is struggling at the charity stripe, producing only a 61.3 free-throw percentage which ranks second to last in the CCAA.
  • Destiny Jackson is the only Coyote averaging double digits in scoring at 12.6.
  • The Coyotes are sitting in 11th place in the CCAA standings, two games ahead of last-place Cal State Monterey Bay.

 SATURDAY VS. THE BRONCOS

  • CPP will make a stop in Los Angeles to play CSULA on Thursday before facing the Cougars on Saturday.
  • The Cougars had their largest margin of victory this season against the Broncos, walking away with an 80-50 win in Kellogg Arena on Jan. 20.
  • Win the win, CSUSM evened the all-time series at 5-5 and is 2-2 when playing in The Sports Center.
  • The Broncos concluded the month of January with a 3-4 record that was highlighted by an 89-80 double-overtime victory at Cal Poly Humboldt on Jan. 15.
  • Last weekend, CPP went 1-1 with a 77-76 loss at Chico State before rebounding with a 90-74 win at Stanislaus State.
  • The Broncos are second in the CCAA with a 35.1 3-point field goal percentage.
  • CPP is dead last in the conference in scoring defense, allowing its opponents to score 66.7 points per game.
  • With six games remaining in the regular season, the Broncos are ninth in the CCAA standings and are 2.5 games back from sixth place.
  • Three Broncos are averaging double digits in points with Ally Bates leading the way at 12.6, followed by Monica Todd (11.0) and Jayda Villareal (10.2).

Jordan Vasquez - National POW Square

D2CIDA NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

  • After a weekend in which she posted back-to-back double-doubles while averaging more than 20 points per game, Jordan Vasquez was  selected as the D2CIDA Women's Basketball National Player of the Week for the stretch of Jan. 31-Feb. 6.
  • Vasquez is the first CSUSM student-athlete to earn a national weekly honor in the NCAA Division II era.
  • Vasquez dominated in two wins, which allowed the Cougars to jump back into first place in the CCAA standings. Vasquez had a 20-point, 12-rebound performance in a 22-point road win over No. 24/16 Cal State East Bay.
  • In just 23 minutes of play against the Pioneers, Vasquez connected on 9-of-12 for her second 20-point game of the season and her fifth double-double.
  • In a road contest against Cal State Dominguez Hills two days later, Vasquez scored 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting and pulled 10 boards for her sixth double-double of the season. She also matched her season high with six assists.
  • Vasquez also picked up her second CCAA Player of the Week honor. 

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returned seven student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Akayla Hackson, Dynnah Buckner, Kelsey Forrester, Kayden Korst, Natalie Nicolosi, Samantha Custodio and Dominique Hernandez. 
  • Nine Cougars hit the court in Cougar blue for the first time this season, including Division-I transfers Sydney Buckley (Winthrop), Bria Dixson (Univ. of Montana) and Shasta Parker (Univ. of Portland) as well as Division-II transfer Katie FitzGerald (Cal State Monterey Bay) and junior-college transfer Kate Carlson (N.D. State College of Science). 
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Natalie Langford and Maitland Kingsley will finally got the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshman Deannah Buckner joined the roster.
  • As the reigning CCAA Regular Season Co-Champions, CSUSM was picked to repeat in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its tenth season of existence.
  • In 2019-20, Jimenez earned her second career CCAA Coach of the Year honor after previously earning the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars set many program records in 2019-20, including most wins (25) and the school's first regular-season conference title. 
  • CSUSM was poised to make its first West Regional appearance in 2019-20 before the season was ultimately cut short due to COVID-19. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament twice, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by a finals appearance in 2019-20.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 211-136 (.608) in her 14 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • In her seven seasons at CSUSM, Jimenez has tallied a record of 86-65 (.570).
