No. 21/12 Cougars Close Out Regular Season at Sonoma, Humboldt

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 21/12 Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (19-2, 17-1 CCAA) will conclude the regular season this week, traveling to Sonoma State on Thursday before trekking up Arcata to face Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday. Both games are slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars extended their longest win streak in program history to 15 victories after recording wins over Stanislaus State and Chico State this past week.
  • CSUSM collected a 80-70 win over Stan State on Thursday with the Cougars' third-best performance at the free throw line after going 19-of-22.
  • Last Saturday in a 82-64 win against Chico, the Cougars had their second-largest rebound margin of the season with a difference of 15 (40-25).
  • Prior to Saturday's win, CSUSM honored its three seniors - Samantha Custodio, Akayla Hackson and Dominique Hernandez.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • In the second official NCAA West Regional Rankings of the season, the Cougars remained at No. 4 behind top-ranked Western Washington, No. 2 Central Washington and No. 3 Cal State East Bay. The top eight in the final poll will advance to the NCAA West Regionals.
  • In the latest D2SIDA Top 25 Poll, CSUSM held steady at No. 12 while moving up to No. 21 in the WBCA Division II Top 25 Poll. 
  • CSUSM clinched a berth and is in the CCAA Tournament set to take place at Cal Poly Humboldt on March 3-5 in Arcata. This will be the Cougars' third appearance in the conference tournament since moving to NCAA Division II in 2015-16.
  • The Cougars are guaranteed either a first- or second-place seed in the tournament and will receive a bye to the semifinals of the CCAA Tournament. 
  • CSUSM sits on top of the CCAA standings with a .944 win percentage (17-1) while Cal State East Bay sits in second with a .933 (14-1). 
  • The Cougars passed the previous best win streak in program history of 11 games set by the 2019-20 squad that led to a share of the CCAA Regular-Season Title.
  • CSUSM's current nine consecutive victories on the road is the best in the program's 11-season history.
  • Hackson moved to second in the CCAA with 15.9 points per game.
  • Hackson joined CSUSM's 1,000-career point club against Cal State Monterey Bay on Jan. 29th. She is currently at 1,084 points, passing Heather Thompson to take over third place in the record books. Cassie Damyanovich (2011-15) sits at the top of the list with 1,217 points and is followed by Savannah Camp (2015-18) with 1,112 points.
  • With her four steals this past weekend, Hackson raised her CSUSM career total to 132 and is second all-time in the record books. In just her two years at CSUSM, Sarah Jackson (2011-13) recorded 147 steals.
  • Earlier this season, Hackson became CSUSM's all-time career leader in made free throws and moved up to 243 made buckets at the charity stripe.
  • The Cougars’ 1.10 assist-turnover ratio ranks on top of the CCAA and 30th in the nation.
  • CSUSM continues to lead the CCAA and now ranks 33rd in Division II in field-goal percentage at 44.6. 
  • The Cougars are dishing out a conference-leading 15.9 assists per game, ranking 29th in Division II.
  • Three Cougars are ranked in the CCAA's top five in field-goal percentage with Vasquez the conference leader at 57.1%, followed by fourth-ranked Hackson at 46.4% and fifth-ranked Dynnah Buckner at 44.6%.
  • Outscoring their opponents by 14.8 points per game, the Cougars have the best scoring margin in the CCAA and rank 23rd in the nation.
  • The Cougars have been performing well at the free throw line this season with a conference-best 76.2%, good enough for 31st in Division II. 
  • Kelsey Forrester ranks 21st in the nation with a 42.3 3-point field-goal percentage and is back on top among CCAA shooters.

THURSDAY AT SONOMA STATE

  • In their previous meeting this season, the Cougars walked away with a 69-55 victory and matched a season-low nine turnovers in the contest.
  • The Cougars hold an 8-4 lead in the all-time series against the Seawolves and are 2-4 when playing in the Wolves' Den.
  • In their last meting in Rohnert Park, the Seawolves topped CSUSM 54-50 on Jan. 23, 2020, which turned out to be the Cougars' final loss of the regular season.
  • Despite having an 8-9 conference record, the Seawolves have only lost three or more games in a row once.
  • Last weekend, SSU collected a 70-62 at Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday before falling 70-53 at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.
  • SSU is sixth in the CCAA standings with a .471 win percentage with Stanislaus State (.467) right on its heels for a spot in the CCAA Tournament.
  • The Seawolves are last in the CCAA in turnovers (437) and offensive rebounds per game (10.1)
  • SSU is leading the conference in free throw attempts (425) but is ranked sixth in free-throw percentage (68.0%)
  • Amanda Luckett ranks fourth in the CCAA in blocked shots per game at 1.06.

 FINAL REGULAR SEASON HOME GAME VS. WILDCATS

  • Cal Poly Humboldt will face CSULA on Thursday before competing against the Cougars on Saturday for its Senior Day.
  • This will be the first meeting between the two teams due to Jan. 6's game being deemed a no contest.
  • CSUSM is 6-5 in the all-time series and is 3-3 when playing in Arcata.
  • CSUSM swept the series against the Jacks in the 2019-20 season, recording an 81-70 victory in San Marcos after collecting a 59-56 overtime win in Arcata.
  • The Jacks have lost their last five games capped by a heartbreaker in San Bernardino where the Coyotes outscored Humboldt 17-9 in the final quarter to win 59-56.
  • The Jacks are still vying for a spot in the CCAA Tournament despite sitting in ninth in the conference standings. A loss to CSULA on Thursday would knock them out of contention.
  • Humboldt is leading the CCAA in personal fouls per game at 15.1 and ranks 67th in the nation.
  • The Jacks have the fewest trips to the free throw line (288) among conference teams yet are ranked fourth in free-throw percentage (69.4).
  • Madison Perry is averaging 36.24 minutes per game and took over the top spot from Hackson in points per game with 16.1.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returned seven student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Akayla Hackson, Dynnah Buckner, Kelsey Forrester, Kayden Korst, Natalie Nicolosi, Samantha Custodio and Dominique Hernandez. 
  • Nine Cougars hit the court in Cougar blue for the first time this season, including Division-I transfers Sydney Buckley (Winthrop), Bria Dixson (Univ. of Montana) and Shasta Parker (Univ. of Portland) as well as Division-II transfer Katie FitzGerald (Cal State Monterey Bay) and junior-college transfer Kate Carlson (N.D. State College of Science). 
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Natalie Langford and Maitland Kingsley will finally got the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshman Deannah Buckner joined the roster.
  • As the reigning CCAA Regular Season Co-Champions, CSUSM was picked to repeat in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its tenth season of existence.
  • In 2019-20, Jimenez earned her second career CCAA Coach of the Year honor after previously earning the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars set many program records in 2019-20, including most wins (25) and the school's first regular-season conference title. 
  • CSUSM was poised to make its first West Regional appearance in 2019-20 before the season was ultimately cut short due to COVID-19. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament twice, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by a finals appearance in 2019-20.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 215-136 (.613) in her 14 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • In her seven seasons at CSUSM, Jimenez has tallied a record of 90-65 (.581).
