Cougars Open CCAA Play at Stanislaus State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos softball team (6-1) will travel to Turlock this weekend to open its conference schedule against Stanislaus State (2-3) on Friday and Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars continue to build on their best start in the NCAA Division II era with a sweep over visiting Azusa Pacific, 4-3 and 3-0, last Friday afternoon at the CSUSM Softball Field.
  • Morgan Salgado went 3-for-6 with a triple and two runs.
  • Starting pitchers Jayline Sloss (5.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 H) and Zoe Ballen (6.0 IP 0 ER, 5 H) each earned runs while Savannah Coyle (2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H) and Jamie Ponce (1.0 IP, 0 ER , 0 H) collected saves.  

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Cougars are hitting .356 while holding their opponents to a .214 batting average.
  • In their first seven games, the Cougars racked up 69 hits, 10 doubles, five triples and two home runs. They pushed 35 runs across the plate while touching home 39 times.
  • CSUSM's pitching has been outstanding as well, allowing only seven earned runs over 49.1 innings.
  • The Cougars have recorded shutouts in two of the seven games while allowing just one run in three of them.
  • CSUSM's .356 batting average is the second highest among CCAA teams.
  • The Cougar pitching staff has a 0.99 ERA after seven games, ranking second behind Cal State Monterey Bay who has a 0.15 ERA.

CCAA SERIES OPENER AT STANISLAUS STATE

  • The last time these two teams met was in 2019 when the Cougars dropped the first three games of the series (4-6, 0-3, 0-3) before rallying back to take a 4-0 shutout victory in the series finale. 
  • The Cougars are 5-14 in the all-time series against the Warriors and are 3-8 when playing in Turlock. 
  • Stan State has not played since competing in the Concordia University Irvine Kickoff Classic on Feb. 4-6. 
  • The Warriors opened the season with a pair of wins over Western Washington (3-1) and Academy of Art (15-0) before falling in three straight to Western Oregon (1-4), Dominican (3-8) and Montana State Billings (1-3). 
  • Before their 2020 season was canceled due to the pandemic, the Warriors were 10-15 overall and 9-11 in CCAA play. 
  • Sidney Crippen-Lay is leading Stan State's offense with a .533 batting average, eight hits and five RBIs. 
  • Delaney Pamplin is the Warriors' ace, pitching 19 of the 31 innings so far this season. She has a 0.00 ERA with 12 strikeouts. 
  • Stan State was picked to finish ninth in the CCAA Softball Preseason Poll. 

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After seeing their 2020 season canceled after 19 games and sitting out the entire 2021 season, CSUSM returns 11 student-athletes from the 2020 season in Marissa Alvarez, Nikki Andelin, Zoe Ballen, Mayca Brown, Bianca Gutierrez, Gianna Lombardi, Kayla Mack, Sabrina Morales, Klarissa Munoz, Jamie Ponce and Ryann Steiner. 
  • Seven Cougars will take the field in Cougar blue for the first time this season - Paige Donnelly, Rachel Jardim, Mackenzie Kestler, Sammie Olivo, Jackie Ramirez, Morgan Salgado and Madison Waymire.
  • Joining the team in 2022 as true freshmen are Aneesa Arredondo, Savannah Coyle, Makenzie Guiliano, Delaney Prater and Jayline Sloss.
  • CSUSM was picked to finish eighth in the 2022 CCAA Softball Preseason Poll.

THE EWING FILE

  • Head coach Stef Ewing enters her second fourth in charge of the Cougar softball season, finishing the 2020 shorten season due to COVID-19 pandemic with a 7-12 record that ended with an exhibition game against Team USA that was preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  • Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
  • She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.
