No. 24/12 Cougars Host Stan State, Chico in Final Homestand

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 24/12 Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (17-2, 15-1 CCAA) will host its final two home games of the regular season, facing Stanislaus State (12-7, 7-6 CCAA) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before taking on Chico State (12-7, 9-5 CCAA) at 1 p.m. on Saturday. 

Prior to Thursday's game, CSUSM will unveil its 2019-20 CCAA Regular-Season Championship banner in The Sports Center. On Saturday, the Cougars will honor those who will be playing their final regular-season home game - Samantha Custodio, Akayla Hackson and Dominique Hernandez - prior to tipoff. 

The CSUSM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is holding its annual food drive from Feb. 10-17. All items collected will benefit the Cougar Pantry and the San Diego Food Bank. All fans in attendance who bring three food items will receive free admission to Thursday's game against Stanislaus State.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars extended their longest win streak in program history to 13 victories after recording wins over Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona last week.
  • CSUSM took down CSUSB, 74-49, on Thursday after four Cougars registered double digits in scoring with Sydney Buckley leading the way with 15 points.
  • Last Saturday in a 51-42 win against CPP, the Cougars had their lowest scoring game of the season but were able to keep their opponents to a season-low as well.
  • Jordan Vasquez also picked up her third CCAA Player of the Week honor after collecting her seventh and eighth double-doubles of the season.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • In the first official NCAA West Regional Rankings of the season, the Cougars come in at No. 4 behind top-ranked Western Washington, No. 2 Central Washington and No. 3 Cal State East Bay. The top eight in the final poll will advance to the NCAA West Regionals.
  • In the latest D2SIDA Top 25 Poll, CSUSM moved up to No. 12 and finally broke into the WBCA Division II Top 25 Poll at No. 24  
  • With Azusa Pacific's loss to Dominican last week, CSUSM took over the No. 2 spot in the D2SIDA West Region poll this week. Western Washington (16-2, 8-2 GNAC) remains at the top despite falling to Northwest Nazarene last week. Joining the Cougars in the top 10 from the CCAA is Cal State East Bay (16-2, 11-1 CCAA), who is right behind CSUSM at No. 3. 
  • CSUSM clinched a berth and is in the CCAA Tournament set to take place at Cal Poly Humboldt on March 3-5 in Arcata. This will be the Cougars' third appearance in the conference tournament since moving to NCAA Division II in 2015-16.
  • The Cougars are guaranteed either a first or second place seed in the tournament and will receive a bye to the semifinals of the CCAA Tournament. 
  • The Cougars passed the program-best win streak set by the 2019-20 squad that led to a share of the CCAA Regular-Season Title.
  • CSUSM's nine consecutive victories on the road is the best in the program's 11-season history.
  • Hackson continues to lead the CCAA in scoring, averaging 15.9 points per game.
  • Hackson joined CSUSM's 1,000 career point club against Cal State Monterey Bay on Jan. 29th. She is currently at 1,053 points, passing Heather Thompson to take over third place in the record books. Cassie Damyanovich (2011-15) sits at the top of the list with 1,217 points and is followed by Savannah Camp (2015-18) with 1,112 points.
  • With her four steals this past weekend, Hackson raised her CSUSM career total to 128 and is second all-time in the record books. In just her two years at CSUSM, Sarah Jackson (2011-13) recorded 147 steals.
  • Earlier this season, Hackson became CSUSM's all-time career leader in made free throws and moved up to 230 made buckets at the charity stripe.
  • The Cougars’ 1.13 assist-turnover ratio ranks on top of the CCAA and 20th in the nation.
  • CSUSM continues to lead the CCAA and now ranks 40th in Division II in field-goal percentage at 44.0. 
  • The Cougars are dishing out a conference-leading 15.7 assists per game, ranking 35th in Division II.
  • Three Cougars are ranked in the CCAA's top 5 in field-goal percentage with Vasquez the conference leader at 56.1%, followed by third-ranked Hackson at 46.1% and fourth-ranked Dynnah Buckner at 44.8%.
  • Outscoring their opponents by 14.9 points per game, the Cougars have the best scoring margin in the CCAA and rank 24th in the nation.
  • The Cougars have been performing well at the free throw line this season with a conference-best 75.9%, good enough for 42nd in Division II. 
  • Kelsey Forrester ranks 17th in the nation with a 42.6 3-point field-goal percentage and second in the CCAA.

THURSDAY AGAINST THE WARRIORS

  • This will be the first meeting between the two teams due to Jan. 15's game being deemed a no contest. 
  • The last time these two teams met, CSUSM defeated Stan State 73-59 on Jan. 30 in The Sports Center. 
  • The Cougars are 3-6 in the all-time series against the Warriors and 2-2 when playing in The Sports Center. 
  • CSUSM has won three of the last five meetings against Stan State. 
  • The Warriors snapped a four-game losing streak last Saturday with a 75-49 win over Cal State Monterey Bay. 
  • Stan State is fifth in the CCAA standings with a .538 win percentage. Cal State Dominguez Hills (.533), Sonoma State (.467) and Cal Poly Humboldt is right on the Warriors' heels for a spot in the CCAA Tournament. 
  • The Warriors are last in the CCAA in fouls per game (20.1) and ranks 273 out of 295 in Division II. 
  • Stan State is struggling with the conference's worst field-goal percentage at 34.9%. 
  • The Warriors have the second-highest steals per game average in the CCAA at 11.4, largely due to the conference leader Da'Myiah Lewis' 3.44 per game average. 

 FINAL REGULAR SEASON HOME GAME VS. WILDCATS

  • Chico State will face CSULA on Thursday in Los Angeles before facing the Cougars on Saturday.
  • On Jan. 13 in Chico, five Cougars scored in double figures to lift CSUSM to a 76-60 win over the Wildcats.
  • CSUSM tallied a season-low nine turnovers for the a third time this season against Chico.
  • With a five-game win streak on the line, the Wildcats have been moving up the CCAA standings and sit third with a .643 win percentage in conference play.
  • Last weekend, the Wildcats registered a 76-53 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday before taking down the San Francisco State Gators, 69-52.
  • The Cougars are 6-4 in the all-time series against Chico State and are 2-2 when playing in The Sports Center.
  • CSUSM's last meeting with the Wildcats in The Sports Center occurred on Jan. 5, 2019, when the Cougars won a 76-67 overtime thriller over Chico State.
  • The Wildcats are leading the CCAA in 3-point field goals made (170), attempted (536) and per game (8.9).
  • Charity Gallegos is leading the team in points (12.6), steals (2.17) and assists (5.5) per game.

Vasquez POW - Square

THIRD CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR

  • For the second consecutive week, and the third time this season, Vasquez was named the CCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week. 
  • Vasquez notched two more double-doubles while leading the Cougars to 13 consecutive wins to earn the award for the week of Feb. 7-13.
  • The sophomore forward from Moreno Valley averaged 15 points and 15 rebounds in CSUSM's two wins last week. The Cougars improved to 17-2 overall and 15-1 in league play, clinching a CCAA Tournament berth. She shot 50% (13-for-26) from the floor with 30 points and 30 rebounds, plus six assists.
  • Vasquez leads the CCAA with a 56.1% field-goal percentage for the season. She's also top 10 in scoring (7th, 14.2 ppg) and rebounding (4th, 8.8 rpg). 

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returned seven student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Akayla Hackson, Dynnah Buckner, Kelsey Forrester, Kayden Korst, Natalie Nicolosi, Samantha Custodio and Dominique Hernandez. 
  • Nine Cougars hit the court in Cougar blue for the first time this season, including Division-I transfers Sydney Buckley (Winthrop), Bria Dixson (Univ. of Montana) and Shasta Parker (Univ. of Portland) as well as Division-II transfer Katie FitzGerald (Cal State Monterey Bay) and junior-college transfer Kate Carlson (N.D. State College of Science). 
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Natalie Langford and Maitland Kingsley will finally got the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshman Deannah Buckner joined the roster.
  • As the reigning CCAA Regular Season Co-Champions, CSUSM was picked to repeat in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its tenth season of existence.
  • In 2019-20, Jimenez earned her second career CCAA Coach of the Year honor after previously earning the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars set many program records in 2019-20, including most wins (25) and the school's first regular-season conference title. 
  • CSUSM was poised to make its first West Regional appearance in 2019-20 before the season was ultimately cut short due to COVID-19. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament twice, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by a finals appearance in 2019-20.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 213-136 (.610) in her 14 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • In her seven seasons at CSUSM, Jimenez has tallied a record of 88-65 (.575).
