Cougars Host CSUSM Fujikura Invitational

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos men's golf team will open its spring season hosting the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Shadowridge Golf Club. 

PREVIOUS TOURNAMENT

  • Matt Pennington carded a 5-under 67 in the third round to win his first collegiate tournament at the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Invitational on Oct. 19 in Seaside, California.
  • Pennington, who had a four-stroke cushion over second-place Christopher Colla of Chico State, finished with a 3-under 213 (73-73-67) and was the only golfer under par in the final round. 
  • As a team, CSUSM finished seventh out of 15 teams.

CSUSM FUJIKURA BREAKDOWN

  • The Cougars will be one of 15 teams competing in the tournament. 
  • This is the sixth time the Cougars have hosted the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational. CSUSM is 5-for-5 on finishing in the top five.
  • In 2020, the Cougars turned in the lowest third round at 5-over 293 to finish tied for second with Oklahoma Christian. They finished two-strokes behind tournament winner UC San Diego.
  • Matthew Moss and former Cougar Justin Vrzich were CSUSM's top golfers, tying for fifth with a 3-over 219.
  • All eight CCAA schools that compete in men's golf are competing in the tournament.
  • The field only includes one Golfstat.com nationally-ranked team, No. 24 Colorado State-Pueblo. 
     

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM has four returners from the 2019-20 team.
  • With the 2020-21 and 2021-22 newcomers combined, four will be wearing Cougar Blue for the first time this year.
  • Prior to shutting down their 2019-20 season due to the pandemic, the Cougars placed third at the Coyote Classic and was paced by Justin Vrzich's first-place tie.
  • CSUSM placed in the top five in five of the six tournaments they competed in 2019-20.
  • In the most recent Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches' Poll released on Oct. 8, the Cougars received 48 votes with No. 25 Delta State collecting 54 votes.

THE HUTTON FILE

  • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
  • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob. 
  • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019.
  • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged member of the NCAA Division II in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
