RV/No. 20 CSUSM Competes at No. 24/16 CSUEB, CSUDH This Week

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV/No. 20 Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (13-2, 11-1 CCAA) will hit the road this week to take on CCAA leader and No. 24/16 Cal State East Bay on Thursday at 5 p.m. before returning to Southern California to face Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday at 1 p.m. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars completed series sweeps over San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay last week after recording a 77-67 win over the Gators before taking down the Otters, 82-54.
  • Against SF State, Dynnah Buckner recorded a career-high five 3-pointers to finish the night with a team-best 21 points.
  • CSUSM shot a season-best 47.8% (11-of-23) from the 3-point line against the Otters.
  • The Cougars extended their winning streak to nine games, marking the second-longest winning streak in program history. In 2019-20, the Cougars won 11 consecutive games to clinch a share of the CCAA Regular-Season Championship.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • In the latest D2SIDA Top 25 Poll, CSUSM is tied with Bentley (Mass.) at No. 20 and is still receiving votes in the WBCA Division II Top 25 Poll.  
  • CSUSM is staying steady in the No. 4 spot in the D2SIDA West Region poll this week. Fellow CCAA opponent Cal State East Bay (15-1, 10-0 CCAA) is still No. 3 while Stanislaus State (11-4, 6-3 CCAA) moved back up to the No. 8 spot.
  • The Cougars are second in the CCAA standings with a .917 winning percentage. CSUEB is on top of the standings with a 10-0 conference record.
  • CSUSM's seven consecutive victories on the road is the best in the program's 11-season history.
  • Hackson is the CCAA scoring leader, averaging 16.7 points per game.
  • With her four steals this past weekend, Hackson raised her CSUSM career total to 119 and is second all-time in the record books. In just her two years at CSUSM, Sarah Jackson (2011-13) recorded 147 steals.
  • The Cougars’ 1.19 assist-turnover ratio ranks on top of the CCAA and 12th in the nation. 
  • CSUSM continues to lead the CCAA and now ranks 43rd in Division II in field-goal percentage at 44.0. 
  • The Cougars are dishing out a conference-leading 16.2 assists per game, ranking 22nd in Division II.
  • Hackson ranks second in the CCAA in field-goal percentage at 47.4% with Dynnah Buckner right behind her in fourth with 46.6%.
  • Outscoring their opponents by 14.4 points per game, the Cougars have the best scoring margin in the CCAA and rank 24th in the nation.
  • The Cougars have been performing well at the free throw line this season with a conference-best 77.0%, good enough for 29th in Division II. 
  • Kelsey Forrester is ranked ninth in the nation with a 45.0 3-point field-goal percentage.

THURSDAY AT EAST BAY

  • The Pioneers upped their winning streak to 14 games last with 70-59 win at Cal State San Bernardino and a 64-55 win Cal Poly Pomona.
  • CSUEB's lone loss this season, 68-55, was against Central Washington at the CCAA-GNAC Crossover in Turlock on Nov. 13.
  • The Pioneers are ranked one spot ahead of CSUSM at No. 3 in the latest D2SIDA West Region Poll.
  • In the first meeting between the Pioneers and Cougars this season, CSUEB came out on top with a 64-56 victory in The Sports Center.
  • CSUEB is the nation's 14th-best rebounding team with 43.81 boards per game.
  • On average, the Pioneers are outrebounding opponents by 10.6 per game - the fourth-best margin in Division II.
  • CSUEB is holding its opponents to the eighth-lowest field-goal percentage in the nation at 33.6.
  • The Pioneers have the second-worst turnovers per game average in the CCAA at 19.9.
  • Three Pioneers are averaging double figures in scoring - Delia Moore (12.9), Madison Schiller (11.8) and Mina Tameliau (11.3).
  • CSUEB holds a 7-5 lead in the all-time series and is 3-2 when playing in Pioneer Gymnasium.
  • The Cougars are 4-2 in their last six meetings with the Pioneers, including a 77-69 win in the quarterfinals of the 2020 CCAA Tournament.

 SATURDAY AT DOMINGUEZ HILLS

  • The Toros have gotten hot in the last few weeks, putting together a five-game winning streak that dates back to a 73-46 win at Cal State Monterey Bay on Jan. 15. The next four victories were by 10 or less points including back-to-back scores of 65-62 at Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino last weekend. 
  • CSUDH is fourth in the CCAA standings, just one game back from third-place Stanislaus State. 
  • The Toros are 6-1 at home this season with their lone loss coming against non-conference opponent Point Loma (76-69) on Nov. 18. 
  • In the all-time series, CSUSM is 5-7 against CSUDH and is 1-4 in the Torodome. 
  • The Cougars have come out on top in the last five meetings against the Toros. 
  • CSUDH is the CCAA leader in steals per game (12.6), ranking the Toros 27th in Division II. 
  • The Toros are recording the second-highest foul count this season with 302. 
  • CSUDH is forcing a conference-best 20.88 turnovers per game while recording the highest turnover margin in the CCAA at 4.18. 
  • Asia Jordan, this week's CCAA Player of the Week, is leading the CCAA in steals (42), field-goal percentage (51.3) and double-doubles (8). 
  • Jordan is averaging 14.8 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returned seven student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Akayla Hackson, Dynnah Buckner, Kelsey Forrester, Kayden Korst, Natalie Nicolosi, Samantha Custodio and Dominique Hernandez. 
  • Nine Cougars hit the court in Cougar blue for the first time this season, including Division-I transfers Sydney Buckley (Winthrop), Bria Dixson (Univ. of Montana) and Shasta Parker (Univ. of Portland) as well as Division-II transfer Katie FitzGerald (Cal State Monterey Bay) and junior-college transfer Kate Carlson (N.D. State College of Science). 
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Natalie Langford and Maitland Kingsley will finally got the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshman Deannah Buckner joined the roster.
  • As the reigning CCAA Regular Season Co-Champions, CSUSM was picked to repeat in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its tenth season of existence.
  • In 2019-20, Jimenez earned her second career CCAA Coach of the Year honor after previously earning the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars set many program records in 2019-20, including most wins (25) and the school's first regular-season conference title. 
  • CSUSM was poised to make its first West Regional appearance in 2019-20 before the season was ultimately cut short due to COVID-19. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament twice, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by a finals appearance in 2019-20.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 209-136 (.606) in her 14 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • In her seven season at CSUSM, Jimenez has tallied a record of 82-65 (.558).
