SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The RV/NR Cal State San Marcos men's golf team will conclude its fall season this week in Hawaii at the Southwest Airlines Hawaii Pacific Shark Shootout competing in the on Oct. 25-26 and Hawai'i Hilo Dennis Rose Intercollegiate on Oct. 28-29.

LAST TIME OUT

• The Cougars carded the lowest round in the field with a 283 on the final day of the Chico State Wildcat Classic for a share of fourth place with a 2-under 862.
• Matt Pennington led the Cougars with a 6-under 210 (69-71-70) to tie for 10th place.
• Greg Mouser moved up 20 spots after carding a 68 in the final round to tie for 17th with a 1-under 215 (74-73-68).

HPU SHARK SHOOTOUT

• This is CSUSM's first time competing in the HPU Shark Shootout. 
• Hawai'i Pacific hosted the inaugural Shark Shootout for the men's golf team in 2021-22 and featured only four universities – Chaminade, Hawai'i Pacific, Hawai'i-Hilo and University of Hawai'i. 
• Serving the military community for more than 100 years, Leilehua Golf Course is an 18-hole golf course nestled between Wheeler Army Airfield and Mililani Tech Park.

DENNIS ROSE INTERCOLLEGIATE

• This is CSUSM's in inaugural appearance in the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate 
• This marks the 17th time UHH will host the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate on the men's side.
• The 2021 tournament was hosted over three days with Colorado Christian (839, -1) taking home the team title and CCU's Cam Sandland (203, -7) the individual medalist honors. 
• World renowned golf has long been associated with the Kohala Coast, and Waikoloa Beach Resort is no exception. Home of "Hawaiʻi's Premiere 27-Hole Golf Experience," Waikoloa Beach Resort Golf is comprised of the Beach Nine, Lakes Nine, and Kings' Nine, and presents a unique opportunity for golfers to design their own golf experience.

 

COUGAR OUTLOOK

• With eight returners from the 2021-22 team, this year's squad only has one new face with transfer Patrick Jaksch from Saddleback College. 
• Redshirt sophomore Matt Pennington returns to defend his CCAA Tournament Title and NCAA West/South Central Regional Title. 
• The 2021-22 team won three tournaments including the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational. 
• CSUSM placed in the top 10 in eight of its 10 tournaments last season including a third-place finish at the CCAA Championships. 

THE HUTTON FILE

• Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
• The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
• The CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022. 
• Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019 and 2022. 
• In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
