Cougars Host Sonoma State on Saturday

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (7-2, 5-1) will return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 8 when the Cougars welcome Sonoma State (4-7, 3-2 CCAA) to The Sports Center for a 1 p.m. tipoff. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars were scheduled to play at CCAA opponent Humboldt State on Thursday, Jan. 6, but COVID-19 health and safety protocols within Lumberjack program forced the game’s cancellation and it will not be made up.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM moved back up to the fifth spot in the D2SIDA West Region poll. Fellow CCAA opponent Cal State East Bay (10-1, 5-0 CCAA) is tied for third while Stanislaus State (10-2, 5-1 CCAA) dropped down to the ninth spot.
  • With her five steals against CSULA, Akayla Hackson raised her CSUSM career total to 107 and is second all-time record books. In just her two years at CSUSM, Sarah Jackson (2011-13) recorded 147 steals.
  • Hackson is third all-time for career made free throws at CSUSM with 190. She's just 12 away from passing current leader and former teammate Jon'Nae Vermillion. 
  • The Cougars’ 1.06 assist-turnover ratio ranks second in the CCAA and 39th in the nation. 
  • CSUSM leads the CCAA and ranks 65th in Division II in field-goal percentage at 42.9.  
  • The Cougars are dishing out a conference-leading 15.4 assists per game.
  • Three Cougars are in the top 10 in the CCAA in field-goal percentage with Jordan Vasquez being the conference leader and 40th in the nation at 55.6%. Hackson ranks third with 50.0% and Dynnah Buckner seventh with 42.4%. 
  • The trio are also ranked in the top 10 in points per game in the CCAA. Hackson ranks second (17.2), followed by Dynnah Buckner in sixth (15.4) and Vasquez in eighth (15.0). 
  • Vasquez is averaging a CCAA-high 4.4 offensive rebounds per game, ranking her 14th in the nation. 
  • Shooting 50.9% from beyond the arc, Kelsey Forrester ranks second in Division II.

SATURDAY AGAINST SONOMA STATE

  • After not playing since Dec. 20th, the Seawolves pulled off a 69-65 victory at Cal State LA on Thursday, Jan. 6. 
  • Two of SSU's last five games have been declared no contests - Dec. 11th at Chico State and Jan 2nd at Humboldt State. 
  • The Seawolves are tied for fourth in the CCAA standings. 
  • The Cougars hold a 7-4 lead in the all-time series against SSU and are 5-1 when listed as the home team (4-1 in The Sports Center). 
  • The Seawolves are committing a CCAA-leading 15.4 fouls per game. 
  • SSU has recorded the most turnovers in the CCAA this season with 228 and ranks ninth in the conference in turnovers per game (19.0). 
  • The Seawolves have the second worst scoring offense in the CCAA at 56.9 but is third in scoring defense at 62.0. 
  • SSU has gone to the charity stripe the second most times in the CCAA (203) while ranking fourth in free throws made (174). 
  • No Seawolf is scoring in double-digits as Amanda Luckett is averaging 9.1 points per game. Luckett is ranked fifth in the CCAA with 10 blocked shots. 

SUSPENSION OF SPECTATORS / WATCH ON CCAA NETWORK

  • CSUSM temporarily suspended spectator attendance for men's and women's basketball games due to the recent rise in positive COVID-19 cases in San Diego County. This temporary suspension will impact the following games:
    • Saturday, Jan. 8 vs. Sonoma State
    • Thursday, Jan. 27 vs. San Francisco State
    • Saturday, Jan. 29 vs. Cal State Monterey Bay
  • All contests will continue to be streamed live online via the CCAA Network at www.ccaanetwork.com/csusm
  • Fans may also download the CCAA Network app on your iOS or Android smartphone, tablet, or through web streaming devices such as Amazon Fire, Roku or Apple TV.  
  • On January 1st, the CCAA Network moved to a subscription-based model at just $9.95 per month.  Subscribers will have access to all CCAA broadcasts, both live and on-demand, for one low monthly price.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returned seven student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Akayla Hackson, Dynnah Buckner, Kelsey Forrester, Kayden Korst, Natalie Nicolosi, Samantha Custodio and Dominique Hernandez. 
  • Nine Cougars hit the court in Cougar blue for the first time this season, including Division-I transfers Sydney Buckley (Winthrop), Bria Dixson (Univ. of Montana) and Shasta Parker (Univ. of Portland) as well as Division-II transfer Katie FitzGerald (Cal State Monterey Bay) and junior-college transfer Kate Carlson (N.D. State College of Science). 
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Natalie Langford and Maitland Kingsley will finally got the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshman Deannah Buckner joined the roster.
  • As the reigning CCAA Regular Season Co-Champions, CSUSM was picked to repeat in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its tenth season of existence.
  • In 2019-20, Jimenez earned her second career CCAA Coach of the Year honor after previously earning the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars set many program records in 2019-20, including most wins (25) and the school's first regular-season conference title. 
  • CSUSM was poised to make its first West Regional appearance in 2019-20 before the season was ultimately cut short due to COVID-19. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament twice, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by a finals appearance in 2019-20.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 203-136 (.599) in her 12 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
