RV/No. 25 Cougars to Host SF State, Cal State Monterey Bay

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV/No. 25 Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (11-2, 9-1 CCAA) returns to The Sports Center this week, hosting San Francisco State (6-9, 4-7 CCAA) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before facing Cal State Monterey Bay (1-11, 0-8) on Saturday at 1 p.m. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM kept its win streak alive this past week with victories at Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino to make it seven in a row.
  • The Cougars outscored Cal Poly Pomona 51-23 in the final 20 minutes of the game to collect an 80-50 victory.
  • The CSUSM offense was balanced against the Broncos as four Cougars scored double figures with Akayla Hackson and Sydney Buckley chipping in 15 each.
  • For the second time this season, CSUSM led wire-to-wire to finish with a 75-48 win over the Coyotes on Saturday.
  • The Cougars dished out a season-high 21 assists with 28 made field goals against CSUSB.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM is back in the D2SIDA Top 25 Poll at No. 25 and is now receiving votes in the WBCA Division II Top 25 Poll.  
  • After three weeks of being No. 5, CSUSM moved up one spot into No. 4 in the D2SIDA West Region poll this week. Fellow CCAA opponent Cal State East Bay (13-1, 8-0 CCAA) slid into No. 3 while Stanislaus State (11-3, 6-2 CCAA) dropped down to tie for the No. 9 spot after suffering a lost to San Francisco State. 
  • The Cougars are second in the CCAA standings with a .900 win percentage. CSUEB is on top of the standings with an 8-0 conference record.
  • Hackson has been the scoring leader in nine of CSUSM's 13 games this season.
  • With her four steals this past weekend, Hackson raised her CSUSM career total to 115 and is second all-time in the record books. In just her two years at CSUSM, Sarah Jackson (2011-13) recorded 147 steals.
  • The Cougars’ 1.18 assist-turnover ratio ranks on top of the CCAA and 12th in the nation. 
  • CSUSM continues to lead the CCAA and now ranks 43rd in Division II in field-goal percentage at 43.8. 
  • The Cougars are dishing out a conference-leading 16.1 assists per game, ranking 28th in Division II.
  • Three Cougars remain in the top 10 in the CCAA in field-goal percentage with Jordan Vasquez being the conference leader and 35th in the nation at 54.6%. Hackson ranks third with 48.7% and Dynnah Buckner sixth with 44.4%. 
  • Hackson is the CCAA leader in points per game with 17.2, ranking 66th in Division II, while Dynnah Buckner ranks seventh with 13.9 point per game.
  • Outscoring their opponents by 13.7 points per game, the Cougars have the best scoring margin in the CCAA.
  • The Cougars have been performing well at the free throw line this season with a conference best (47th in Division II) 75.3%. 
  • Kelsey Forrester is ranked 11th in the nation with a 45.7 3-point field-goal percentage.

THURSDAY VS SF STATE

  • The Gators have won only two of their last six games, including a 69-54 victory over regionally-ranked Stanislaus State last Saturday.
  • SF State dropped a 63-58 decision against Chico State last Thursday at home.
  • CSUSM is 7-2 in the all-time series against SF State and is 3-1 when playing in The Sports Center.
  • In their last game of 2021, the Cougars came out on top with an 83-66 victory in San Francisco. Jordan Vasquez and Akayla Hackson each had 21 points while Dynnah Buckner chipped in 20.
  • The Gators are ninth in the CCAA standings, 2.5 games behind sixth-place Chico State.
  • SF State is averaging a conference-low 35.2 rebounds per game and 23.4 defensive rebounds per game.
  • Taimane Lesa-Hardee ranks second in the CCAA in steals per game after averaging 2.62 over 13 games.
  • The Gators are also posting the worst 3-point field-goal percentage in the CCAA at 25.7%.
  • Mya Blake is leading SF State's offense with 12.8 points per game.

 SATURDAY AGAINST MONTEREY BAY

  • With eight consecutive losses and four canceled games in conference play, CSUMB's last victory came on Nov. 23 when the Otters defeated Holy Names 53-46 on the road. 
  • Seven of CSUMB's 12 games were double-figure losses with its 81-52 (-29) loss against Fresno Pacific on Nov. 20 being its largest.
  • CSUSM held off the charging Otters to come away with a 76-70 victory on Dec. 9 in Seaside. Akayla Hackson led all scorers with 24 points while Dynnah Buckner chipped in 20 with a career-best four 3-pointers.
  • The Otters are in last place in the CCAA standings, two games behind eleventh-place Cal State San Bernardino.
  • The Cougars are 8-2 in the all-time series against CSUMB and have won the last seven contests against the Otters.
  • CSUSM is 4-0 when competing at home against the Otters with a 3-0 record in The Sports Center.
  • CSUMB is dead last in 16 categories including field-goal percentage (35.4), scoring margin (-13.5), steals per game (6.0) 3-point field goals per game (4.2) turnovers per game (23.2) and assists per game (7.9).
  • The Otters are second-to-last in Division II in assist-turnover ratio at .34.
  • CSUMB is ranked second in the CCAA with a 6.7 rebound margin.
  • Emily Perez is leading the CCAA with an 85.1 free-throw percentage.
  • In her eight games played, Lauryn Pointer is CSUMB's leading scorer with 13.3 points per game.

SUSPENSION OF SPECTATORS / WATCH ON CCAA NETWORK

  • CSUSM temporarily suspended spectator attendance for men's and women's basketball games due to the recent rise in positive COVID-19 cases in San Diego County. This temporary suspension will impact the following games:
    • Thursday, Jan. 27 vs. San Francisco State
    • Saturday, Jan. 29 vs. Cal State Monterey Bay
  • All contests will continue to be streamed live online via the CCAA Network at www.ccaanetwork.com/csusm
  • Fans may also download the CCAA Network app on your iOS or Android smartphone, tablet, or through web streaming devices such as Amazon Fire, Roku or Apple TV.  
  • On January 1st, the CCAA Network moved to a subscription-based model at just $9.95 per month.  Subscribers will have access to all CCAA broadcasts, both live and on-demand, for one low monthly price.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returned seven student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Akayla Hackson, Dynnah Buckner, Kelsey Forrester, Kayden Korst, Natalie Nicolosi, Samantha Custodio and Dominique Hernandez. 
  • Nine Cougars hit the court in Cougar blue for the first time this season, including Division-I transfers Sydney Buckley (Winthrop), Bria Dixson (Univ. of Montana) and Shasta Parker (Univ. of Portland) as well as Division-II transfer Katie FitzGerald (Cal State Monterey Bay) and junior-college transfer Kate Carlson (N.D. State College of Science). 
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Natalie Langford and Maitland Kingsley will finally got the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshman Deannah Buckner joined the roster.
  • As the reigning CCAA Regular Season Co-Champions, CSUSM was picked to repeat in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its tenth season of existence.
  • In 2019-20, Jimenez earned her second career CCAA Coach of the Year honor after previously earning the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars set many program records in 2019-20, including most wins (25) and the school's first regular-season conference title. 
  • CSUSM was poised to make its first West Regional appearance in 2019-20 before the season was ultimately cut short due to COVID-19. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament twice, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by a finals appearance in 2019-20.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 207-136 (.603) in her 14 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • In her seven season at CSUSM, Jimenez has tallied a record of 80-65 (.552).
