Cougars Face CPP, CSUSB on the Road

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The NR/RV Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (9-2, 7-1 CCAA) will close out its two-week road trip this week, taking on Cal Poly Pomona (4-8, 3-5 CCAA) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before trekking over to Cal State San Bernardino (6-8, 3-5 CCAA) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars collected their fifth consecutive win with a 76-60 victory at Chico State last Thursday. 
  • For the first time this season, CSUSM led from wire-to-wire in the game with five Cougars scoring in double figures. 
  • For the second consecutive game and third time this season, CSUSM tallied a season-low nine turnovers.
  • The Cougars were due to play at Stanislaus State at The Sports Center on Saturday night, but COVID health and safety measures within the Warriors' program forced the game to be declared a no contest and the game will not be rescheduled.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM remains steady in the fifth spot in the D2SIDA West Region poll. Fellow CCAA opponent Cal State East Bay (10-1, 5-0 CCAA) dropped down to fourth while Stanislaus State (10-2, 5-1 CCAA) slide down to the eighth spot after not playing for the second consecutive weekend. 
  • Hackson became the CSUSM career leader in made free throws last week at Chico. With her 7-of-8 performance at the charity stripe, Hackson raised her total to 204 to pass former teammate Jon'Nae Vermillion's 201 made free throws. . 
  • Hackson has been the scoring leader in eight of CSUSM's 11 games this season.
  • With her a steal against Chico State, Hackson raised her CSUSM career total to 111 and is second all-time in the record books. In just her two years at CSUSM, Sarah Jackson (2011-13) recorded 147 steals.
  • The Cougars’ 1.15 assist-turnover ratio ranks top of the CCAA and 19th in the nation. 
  • CSUSM leads the CCAA and ranks 65th in Division II in field-goal percentage at 42.7. 
  • The Cougars are dishing out a conference-leading 15.5 assists per game, ranking 42nd in Division II.
  • Three Cougars remain in the top 10 in the CCAA in field-goal percentage with Jordan Vasquez being the conference leader and 54th in the nation at 53.3%. Hackson ranks third with 48.5% and Dynnah Buckner seventh with 42.6%. 
  • The trio is also ranked in the top 10 in points per game in the CCAA. Hackson ranks second (17.7) behind Stan State's Kyanna Davis (20.1 ppg), who suffered a season-ending injury before the holidays. Dynnah Buckner ranks eighth (14.5) followed by Vasquez in ninth (13.7). 
  • The Cougars have been performing at the free throw line this season, ranking second in the CCAA (36th in Division II) with a 76.5%. Dynnah Buckner (81.6) and Hackson (80.0) are No. 3 and No. 4 in the conference. 
  • Kelsey Forrester and Hackson are in the top two spots in 3-point field goal percentage in the CCAA statistics with 45.1% and 36.8%, respectively.

THURSDAY AT CAL POLY POMONA

  • Since the new year, the Broncos have only played three of their five scheduled games.
  • CPP went 1-1 last weekend, falling 58-42 at Sonoma State on Thursday before pulling off an 89-80 overtime victory at Humboldt State on Saturday.
  • With a 3-5 conference record, CPP is tied for eight with Cal State San Bernardino in the CCAA standings.
  • The Cougars are 4-5 in the all-time series against Cal Poly Pomona and are 2-3 when playing in Pomona.
  • CSUSM recorded a series sweep in 2019-20, collecting a 71-54 win in Pomona before registering a 79-63 victory in The Sports Center.
  • The Broncos rank 295th out of 297 Division II teams with a 55.6 free-throw percentage.
  • CPP is dominating from behind the 3-point line, boasting a CCAA-best 37.4%.
  • The Broncos are averaging 18.6 turnovers per game, ranking them 10th in the CCAA and 213th in the nation.
  • Ally Bates is leading the Broncos in scoring (11.0 ppg) and assists (35).
  • Clara James has accumulated a conference-leading 22 blocked shots, seven more than Cal State San Bernardino's Jada Johnson who ranks second in the CCAA.

 SATURDAY AT SAN BERNARDINO

  • After beginning 2022 with back-to-back canceled games against CPP and CSUMB, the Coyotes have gone 3-1.
  • CSUSB walked away with a 68-59 win over San Francisco State on Jan. 8.
  • Last weekend, the Coyotes went 1-1 with a 63-51 win on Thursday at Humboldt before falling 64-57 at Sonoma State on Saturday.
  • CSUSM is 5-3 in the all-time series against CSUSB and is 3-0 when playing in San Bernardino.
  • The Cougars have won the last three games in the series with the last victory by 23 point margin (74-51).
  • The Coyotes are leading the CCAA in only one category, blocked shots. CSUSB is averaging 3.6 blocked shots per game and have tallied 50 this season.
  • Mia Dufresne ranks second with in the conference with 15 blocked shots while teammate Tatianna Russell is No. 4 with 11.
  • Destiny Jackson is the only Coyote averaging double figure in points at 13.0.
  • CSUSB is only shooting 25.5% from behind the arc, ranking the Coyotes 11th in the CCAA.
  • The Coyotes are tied with Cal Poly Pomona for eighth in the CCAA standings.

SUSPENSION OF SPECTATORS / WATCH ON CCAA NETWORK

  • CSUSM temporarily suspended spectator attendance for men's and women's basketball games due to the recent rise in positive COVID-19 cases in San Diego County. This temporary suspension will impact the following games:
    • Thursday, Jan. 27 vs. San Francisco State
    • Saturday, Jan. 29 vs. Cal State Monterey Bay
  • All contests will continue to be streamed live online via the CCAA Network at www.ccaanetwork.com/csusm
  • Fans may also download the CCAA Network app on your iOS or Android smartphone, tablet, or through web streaming devices such as Amazon Fire, Roku or Apple TV.  
  • On January 1st, the CCAA Network moved to a subscription-based model at just $9.95 per month.  Subscribers will have access to all CCAA broadcasts, both live and on-demand, for one low monthly price.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returned seven student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Akayla Hackson, Dynnah Buckner, Kelsey Forrester, Kayden Korst, Natalie Nicolosi, Samantha Custodio and Dominique Hernandez. 
  • Nine Cougars hit the court in Cougar blue for the first time this season, including Division-I transfers Sydney Buckley (Winthrop), Bria Dixson (Univ. of Montana) and Shasta Parker (Univ. of Portland) as well as Division-II transfer Katie FitzGerald (Cal State Monterey Bay) and junior-college transfer Kate Carlson (N.D. State College of Science). 
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Natalie Langford and Maitland Kingsley will finally got the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshman Deannah Buckner joined the roster.
  • As the reigning CCAA Regular Season Co-Champions, CSUSM was picked to repeat in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its tenth season of existence.
  • In 2019-20, Jimenez earned her second career CCAA Coach of the Year honor after previously earning the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars set many program records in 2019-20, including most wins (25) and the school's first regular-season conference title. 
  • CSUSM was poised to make its first West Regional appearance in 2019-20 before the season was ultimately cut short due to COVID-19. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament twice, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by a finals appearance in 2019-20.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 205-136 (.601) in her 14 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
  • In her seven season at CSUSM, Jimenez has tallied a record of 80-65 (.552).
