Cougars Head To Chico For Thursday Matchup

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (8-2, 6-1 CCAA) will travel to Northern California to face Chico State (5-5, 2-3 CCAA) in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff on Thursday.

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars collected their fourth consecutive win with a 69-55 victory over Sonoma State last Saturday in The Sports Center.
  • Akayla Hackson led all scorers with 25 points, earning her second consecutive CCAA Player of the Week honor (see below).
  • CSUSM matched its season low of nine turnovers that the Cougars achieved against Seattle Pacific in their season opener.
  • The Cougars were due to play at Stanislaus State at The Sports Center on Saturday night, but COVID health and safety measures within the Warriors' program forced the game to be declared a no contest and the game will not be rescheduled.

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM stayed steady in the fifth spot in the D2SIDA West Region poll. Fellow CCAA opponent Cal State East Bay (10-1, 5-0 CCAA) remains tied for third while Stanislaus State (10-2, 5-1 CCAA) moved up to the sixth spot despite not playing last weekend.
  • With her three steals against SSU, Akayla Hackson raised her CSUSM career total to 110 and is second all-time in the record books. In just her two years at CSUSM, Sarah Jackson (2011-13) recorded 147 steals.
  • Hackson is third all-time for career made free throws at CSUSM with 197. She's just five away from passing current leader and former teammate Jon'Nae Vermillion. 
  • The Cougars’ 1.13 assist-turnover ratio ranks second in the CCAA and 23rd in the nation. 
  • CSUSM leads the CCAA and ranks 60th in Division II in field-goal percentage at 43.0  
  • The Cougars are dishing out a conference-leading 15.8 assists per game, ranking 40th in Division II.
  • Three Cougars remain in the top 10 in the CCAA in field-goal percentage with Jordan Vasquez being the conference leader and 52nd in the nation at 53.6%. Hackson ranks third with 50.0% and Dynnah Buckner seventh with 42.5%. 
  • The trio is also ranked in the top 10 in points per game in the CCAA. Hackson ranks second (18.0) behind Stan State's Kyanna Davis (20.1 ppg), who suffered a season-ending injury before the holidays. Dynnah Buckner ranks  seventh (14.8) followed by Vasquez in ninth (13.9). 
  • Shooting 48.3% from beyond the arc, Kelsey Forrester ranks fifth in Division II. 
  • Last weekend, only four of the 12 CCAA women's basketball games scheduled were played took with eight being declared no contests due to COVID.

THURSDAY AT CHICO STATE

  • The Wildcats have only played one game since the start of the new year, handing Stanislaus State its first conference lost of the 2021-22 season with a 67-58 victory in Chico on Jan. 2.
  • With a 2-3 conference record, Chico State is tied for seventh with Cal State Dominguez Hills in the CCAA standings.
  • The Cougars are 5-4 in the all-time series against Chico State and are 3-2 when playing in Chico.
  • In their lone meeting against the Wildcats in 2019-20, the Cougars collected a 69-57 victory in Chico.
  • Chico State leads the CCAA in assist-turnover ratio (1.13) and ranks 22nd in Division II.
  • The Wildcats are committing the fewest turnovers in the conference while ranking ninth in the nation with only 132.
  • Chico State is performing at the charity stripe, boasting a CCAA-best 76.2% (36th in nation).
  • The Wildcats are ranked second in the CCAA behind CSUSM in assists per game at 14.9.
  • Three Wildcats are averaging double-digits in scoring with Charity Gallegos leading the charge at 13.2 ppg.
  • Chico State is leading the CCAA in home attendance, averaging 328 in the Wildcats' four home games. Unfortunately, Chico State announced on January 7 that no spectators will be allowed at Thursday's game.

 HACKSON NETS SECOND CCAA WEEKLY HONOR

  • For the second consecutive week, Hackson has been named CCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week (Jan. 3-9).
  • In her encore performance, the senior from Sunnyvale netted 25 points and six rebounds in the Cougars' 69-55 win over Sonoma State last Saturday.
  • Hackson shot 50% from the field (8-of-16) while dishing out three assists and collecting three steals in the game. 
  • The 5-foot-8 guard was last week's Player of the Week with a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) outing against Cal State LA.
  • In November, Jordan Vasquez picked up CSUSM's first women's basketball CCAA Player of the Week.

SUSPENSION OF SPECTATORS / WATCH ON CCAA NETWORK

  • CSUSM temporarily suspended spectator attendance for men's and women's basketball games due to the recent rise in positive COVID-19 cases in San Diego County. This temporary suspension will impact the following games:
    • Thursday, Jan. 27 vs. San Francisco State
    • Saturday, Jan. 29 vs. Cal State Monterey Bay
  • All contests will continue to be streamed live online via the CCAA Network at www.ccaanetwork.com/csusm
  • Fans may also download the CCAA Network app on your iOS or Android smartphone, tablet, or through web streaming devices such as Amazon Fire, Roku or Apple TV.  
  • On January 1st, the CCAA Network moved to a subscription-based model at just $9.95 per month.  Subscribers will have access to all CCAA broadcasts, both live and on-demand, for one low monthly price.

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • After sitting out the 2020-21 season, CSUSM returned seven student-athletes from the 2019-20 season in Akayla Hackson, Dynnah Buckner, Kelsey Forrester, Kayden Korst, Natalie Nicolosi, Samantha Custodio and Dominique Hernandez. 
  • Nine Cougars hit the court in Cougar blue for the first time this season, including Division-I transfers Sydney Buckley (Winthrop), Bria Dixson (Univ. of Montana) and Shasta Parker (Univ. of Portland) as well as Division-II transfer Katie FitzGerald (Cal State Monterey Bay) and junior-college transfer Kate Carlson (N.D. State College of Science). 
  • Joining the team in 2020-21, redshirt freshmen Natalie Langford and Maitland Kingsley will finally got the opportunity to suit up for CSUSM this season while true freshman Deannah Buckner joined the roster.
  • As the reigning CCAA Regular Season Co-Champions, CSUSM was picked to repeat in the 2021-22 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE

  • Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her seventh season in charge of the Cougar women's basketball team, a program that is only in its tenth season of existence.
  • In 2019-20, Jimenez earned her second career CCAA Coach of the Year honor after previously earning the award as the head coach at Cal State Monterey Bay during the 2010-11 season. 
  • With Jimenez at the helm, the Cougars set many program records in 2019-20, including most wins (25) and the school's first regular-season conference title. 
  • CSUSM was poised to make its first West Regional appearance in 2019-20 before the season was ultimately cut short due to COVID-19. 
  • The Cougars have advanced to the CCAA Tournament twice, making it to the semifinals in 2018-19 followed by a finals appearance in 2019-20.
  • Jimenez has compiled a 204-136 (.600) in her 12 seasons coaching in the CCAA, spending two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.
